I use Ahastyle ear hooks all the time with mine regardless of running or not. Reason being is these headphones are light and you forget they are in your ears which means they can fall out without you even realizing it. Ear hooks assure they never fall out except if you are taking off a shirt or garment over your head it might swipe them off. Ear hooks are a must in my opinion. I have a case on my ear pods charger that has a carabiner. I use the carabiner and route it through the holes in the ear hooks to keep my ear hooks attached like a keychain. Yes, you have to take ear hooks off to put them in the case. Minor inconvenience and you can do it fairly quickly once you have practice.

It depends how much you use them. My husband uses his airpods daily at work and the main issue is battery life. AppleCare extends the warranty to 2 years and will replace the battery if it's under 80% capacity for free (versus $49 out of pocket). Since Costco's AppleCare is on sale for $23, I figure why not. If you don't plan to use your airpods that much, you might not have the battery issue though.
