While you need some materials to work with, they can be bought pretty easily on amazon and at michaels and are usually card stock or paper unless you want to do something specific like vinyl, wood, leather, fabric, and even those aren't hard to find. I would focus on the markers, the various blades, and the tools (picks, spatulas, etc). From what I can tell from my wife, those things can make the experience much more pleasant when trying to apply things cut out, get them off the mats, etc. The mats do wear out, but they can be washed multiple times over before they need replacement and go on sale on amazon a lot.

Several of their material packs are currently priced so low (clearance) that it's really hard to tell what's a "deal" and what isn't. I grabbed the Maker from the Walmart deal and was able to buy twenty different materials (including 180" rolls of black, white, gold, and silver) for under $70 with a one-month Access sign-up. This one looks like it comes with markers, blades, etc, but fewer materials.

For someone who doesn't know anything about the ecosystem trying to buy as a gift, it's enough to give you a headache.

Anyone know if ordering from Cricut directly results in sales tax (in MO)? If they don't charge tax in Missouri that would be a plus for me! Smilie

I bought two and both have shipped. Access even knocked an additional 28 bucks off each. Great deal indeed.

This sale has been on for the last 2-3 days. I lucked out and brought the Explore Air 2 Daybreak bundle (white with digital content) at my local Walmart for $179. I spent another $70 on starter materials (tools, vinyl, iron on), so the everything bundles are a great deal. I'm still feeling the burn from the other day when cricut.com cancelled my order twice. who knows how long it will take to get the machine? So I opted to get mine at a b&m. Good luck, crafty people!
p.s. The Walmart in Carmel, IN had 2 emerald Explore Air 2 available for $179.
