I just purchased this water heater, normally $1299, for $799 + tax + $75 shipping.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem.../312742081

Steps to get deal:
1) Go to above link
2) Change store to zip code 15010(Edit: use Zip 97322 for $699 instead of $799)
3) Select Ship to Home (unless you happen to live close to this store), add to cart.
4) Check out.

Additional notes:
1) Federal tax credit of $300. State tax credits vary, in my home state we get an additional $400 (bringing this heater down to $99 + $75 shipping + tax).
2) For many/most, the $75 shipping is worth it even if you can get this price locally as these heaters are quite heavy and supposedly must be transported vertically.
3) Do your homework on these hybrid heaters before purchasing. You need 220V to operate. Installation expense is generally much higher with hybrid electric vs standard electric resistance heaters and gas heaters. Hot water recovery is very slow (but you can switch to standard electric mode for rapid recovery when you know your usage will be high, e.g. having company over). They can apparently be loud, so if this will be located close to a bedroom, important to think about. There are important climate and installation location factors to consider--just google.
4) The newest generation of this series from Rheem, called "Proterra" can be had for $1269, a slight discount compared to full price (15% for my location). After carefully examining specs, photos, etc - it seems that the only difference with the Proterra series is built-in leak detection with auto-shutoff. FYI if that feature is important to you, you can add it for $219:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem...513?NCNI-5
5) This is for 50 gallon. Looks like if you need 65 gal or 80 gal, the Proterra is actually on sale (whereas the Performance Platinum is full price), making the Proterra cheaper.

The 40 gallon is listed $50 cheaper at $649. Be aware it's not much smaller though - 2 inches less diameter and 1" TALLER (63" vs 62" for the 50gal). And you'll need 6-8" air gap on top to clean the filter and get fresh air.

It would fit but I would have to add duct work to another room as they require at least 700 sq-ft of space for the heat pump to work effectively.

I have a 65 gallon version of these installed last year. $27 dollars a year in energy consumption according to Sense Energy Monitor. My house has 2 hot water heaters so I bought this one to replace my other hot water heater. Great find!
Hi, one of the comments says that it's very noisy. Can you please let me know if it's as noisy as an AC unit?

Dam got excited and then read thru post and it's electric. Guess I'm back to hunting a natural gas water heater.

I currently have a 50 gal electric water heater. Will it be compatible and easy to instal (by a contractor of course). Dont want to order it, get it here and realize it wont work for our setup
Yes, compatible and easily installed by contractor. Just require some space to have air moving. Also you will need a drain hose for the heat pump to drain.

Wanted to switch, but my gas bill is usually only 20-30 per month and most of that is service fees so I estimate my hot water usage is only like $5 a month which would take 10 years for this to pay for itself, maybe once my kids are older and want to shower more than the 2 times a week I have to force them to do then it might be worth the upgrade.

I currently have two 50 gallon electric water heaters, installed in series. Any recommendations if I should get two 50 gallon hybrids or just go with one 80 gallon hybrid unit?

Edit: Both sit in the garage in Florida weather and I have plenty of space around them for the heat pump to be efficient. Price differential is $80 less for the extra 20 gallon capacity and I would be able to use existing plumbing setup for the most part. Thoughts?

Excellent heater if you use electric. I ended up running a gas line and went with gas in my area.

I called Rheem, they said the difference between the Proterra model and the Performance Plat model is just the auto shut off valve and the leak detection. This could be added later with Item #SP21111. The hybrid does cool the area it is in. I am asking if anyone has experience with it. My garage gets HOT. Any cooling would help greatly.

So, if anyone can shine a light on the cooling factor, please do so.

Thanks.

I purchased a 50 gallon version for my Mt house in NC about 18 months ago. It sits in the crawl space. Installation is not difficult for someone with basic plumbing skills, but I would suggest spending an hour or two reading the Home Depot questions and reviews section on this product to get a sense of pros/cons to HP water heaters. This product is not a plug and play replacement for a standard electric WH as you need to install a condensate line and the water inlet/outlet are located on the side of the tank. It is also heavier/taller than a electric tank of similar capacity. My Rheem is fairly quiet...about as loud as a refrigerator. I use the HP only setting and set my water temperature at 135°. These units work best in warm climates...a garage in Florida would be ideal. I replaced my standard electric WH with this HPWH because my electric rates are very high...so far, it's been a good decision. I should recoup my investment (including tax credits) by next year. That said, if I already had a natural gas WH, I would not replace with this unit

I wish these had a remote heat exchanger option. I have one of the GE ones that fails and leaks refrigerant over time, but they've replaced the coil system twice and this third unit seems to be holding. When it works, it's fabulous - helps cool the house in the summer and costs about the same as gas to heat water. When it doesn't, it's like a regular WH - and since it's in the heated/cooled house I set it to standard only from mid Dec through early March.
