I just purchased this water heater, normally $1299, for $799 + tax + $75 shipping.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem.../312742081

Steps to get deal:
1) Go to above link
2) Change store to zip code 15010(Edit: use Zip 97322 for $699 instead of $799)
3) Select Ship to Home (unless you happen to live close to this store), add to cart.
4) Check out.

Additional notes:
1) Federal tax credit of $300. State tax credits vary, in my home state we get an additional $400 (bringing this heater down to $99 + $75 shipping + tax).
2) For many/most, the $75 shipping is worth it even if you can get this price locally as these heaters are quite heavy and supposedly must be transported vertically.
3) Do your homework on these hybrid heaters before purchasing. You need 220V to operate. Installation expense is generally much higher with hybrid electric vs standard electric resistance heaters and gas heaters. Hot water recovery is very slow (but you can switch to standard electric mode for rapid recovery when you know your usage will be high, e.g. having company over). They can apparently be loud, so if this will be located close to a bedroom, important to think about. There are important climate and installation location factors to consider--just google.
4) The newest generation of this series from Rheem, called "Proterra" can be had for $1269, a slight discount compared to full price (15% for my location). After carefully examining specs, photos, etc - it seems that the only difference with the Proterra series is built-in leak detection with auto-shutoff. FYI if that feature is important to you, you can add it for $219:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem...513?NCNI-5
5) This is for 50 gallon. Looks like if you need 65 gal or 80 gal, the Proterra is actually on sale (whereas the Performance Platinum is full price), making the Proterra cheaper.

My electrician put a disconnect as per the local laws. Even after putting the fuse to the disconnect, The water heater wont turn on. When I put the electric presence detector near the power unit of water heater, it doesnt beep.. but my electrician says connection from disconnect to water heater is present.. The electric presence detector beeps near the disconnect.

are there any other switch or settings that need to be turned on to enable the water heater.

Did you flip breaker back on? You have a secondary power switch (mine does)?

Can anyone with cold winters describe their water usage and their KWH usage? I have an old power vented 50 gallon tank. To replace it, a regular efficiency 50 gallon power vented unit costs right about $1k. I use about 15 therms a month to heat my water currently at a rate of about $.45/therm. I anticipate this to be higher, but with the $300 tax credit, the breakeven is about 10 years.

Anyone running this hotter, say 130-140 degrees with a mixing valve, somewhere where it gets colder? I may just have to eat the return cost unless someone in Northeast ohio wants to come pick this up from me!

It would have been easier and cheaper to add a recirculating pump. I had the same issue. But I actually went from two heaters to a single 80 gallon one even farther away. With a recirculating pump that runs every 15 minutes to keep hot water in the lines.
I plan on setting up some sort of recirculation system at some point. I came across this Rheem Tech Bulletin [amazonaws.com] which gives some information regarding their heat pump water heaters and recirculation systems.

I plan on making it somewhat smart and perhaps only circulate hot water when I predict that there will be a demand. I've got smart water and power usage monitoring so I will experiment a bit to try to find the right balance of comfort (instant hot water) and cost (water heater running more often).

'Electric presence detector' hehehee
I like that for non contact voltage detector.
On a serious note, check with voltage meter if you have one for 240v at the tank but be very careful this is high voltage and can seriously hurt you.

No switch is on the heater. Connect the correct wires to the top of the water heater. Don't forget the ground wire. Flip the circuit breaker on, the onboard screen will come on and choose the settings.

I know we all look for bargains here but it pays to have a plumber install this. This water heater is not easy to install. My plumber did mine. It passed inspection and the city inspector said it needs to be installed by a pro. If you have to pay around $2000 including installation it's still a great deal. My Electric bill dropped dramatically. . Mine will pay for itself in about 16 months. It's in my Florida garage. Don't expect it to cool your garage that much. It's just a bonus feature but it's not like putting AC in your Garage. I'm very happy with mine for sure. Didn't think a Hybrid would be that efficient.

A little bit over a year ago, I got several quotes to replace my gas water heater with the hybrid heat pump, and they were super expensive. Lowest is $3900, and that's excluding any of the electrical work. Highest is $6300. Take a look at the attached for fun. laugh out loud I live in California. There is no way I'm paying that much to replace a water heater. I don't see it being lots of work other than running a conduit, installing a disconnect switch, and a breaker and redo some plumbing pipes. Average hourly rate of a plumber and electrician is not that much. Say $60 an hour. I still don't understand how they come up these numbers.

As to "how they come up with these numbers", it's a game of throw a bucket of sh*t on the wall and see if it sticks. And it's surprising how often it does stick. It becomes a matter of timing and which rip-off artist gets to hook the sucker homeowner first.

It's simply an indicator that the plumber is not hungry for work, and is trying to only do jobs where he can make a killing instead of an honest living. People may, with enough bids, eventually find someone that is not a scumbag - but it takes some time & patience.

I've got and done all that too. Unless you have a very set schedule it's very hard to predict when you are going to use water. As always it's best to keep it simple. So just turning the pump on every 15 minutes to charge the line works well. That's what I do, as well as run it for a few minutes when the light switch comes on in the bathroom. The Grunfos pump have a "smart" feature to analyze usage, but I don't think it's smart at all. It would also be more beneficial to insulate the lines to prevent heat loss.

So from experience I've:
- Insulated both supply and return lines
- Run the pump for 3 minutes every 15 minutes.
- Run the pump for 5 minutes when a bathroom light turns on.

I paid $2000 but I'm getting around $800 in a rebate. I received different quotes as well. One was about $3800. Owned a house for years and learned how to play the game when talking to the contractor. I've learned that one-man operation companies are the best when it comes to price.

The disconnect turned out to be bad. The heater works fine now.
