R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.

I ended up buying one of the ebay Boost Mobile numbers and went through with the port process. Well it turns out the Boost number I got may not work with Cricket. I didn't notice it earlier but the seller listed it as incompatible online with Cricket Wireless. I didn't think to look at the fine print because I've been doing various Metro and Cricket port deals for the last 5 years. I'm hoping my order ships and that they don't cancel it.

That's a complicated question. Normally, port-in should not go through until you activate the SIM card; however, Cricket has been known to activate/port-in even before they ship the device.

It didn't work not because of the 180 days. It doesn't work for existing customer period! Regardless if you are porting in a line to your account or not. Hence the comprehensive wiki to create new account and self refer etc to get the cost down. So it will be $110 and if you combine the account, you will get the 2x$25 self referral to offset it.

you might need to call cust. service if the account #'s are different. They should email you, but sometimes they don't and your order will not go through.
