You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.
It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.
Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.
back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

( A bit of fun trivia - that credit card sized card is the real "sim"
trying to buy a phone number any suggestions on ebay? PM me. looking to buy a number before i purchase the phone.
Apple Online here are the terms : You can use up to 8 Apple Gift Cards. Apple Gift Cards can't be used with Apple Pay, PayPal or split credit card payments.
Another fact that has been reported atleast twice in this thread but also keeps getting misrepresented is that per the terms and conditions for cricket. You MUST "Activate" the phone on the $60 plan to complete the deal. Yes, you can then downgrade it to the $30 plan immediately after, but if you are trading them in you must activate the new iPhone on the plan prior or you will be charged full retail for the phone even if auto pay is turned off. They must bill your payment method used to purchase the deal.

Worst case scenario - I'll trade these back in to Apple for a bunch of Apple credit. I realized it's kind of a no brainer you come out ahead either way.
