R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.
As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.
I bought 2 already. total cost $196 for 2 phones. trade in value of SE at apple is $210

Weird question, I ordered the phone to my home address but because of work travel, I won't be able to get to it until early next year, is that going to affect something?

Is there a time limit to activate it?
What do you plan to do with it? Use it as a trade in burner - then no, no issues
Do you plan to use it on cricket - my gut sense is it'll start bleeding your credit and when you activate it next year it might say there's no balance and depending on when it ran out - ask for a fee to reinstate the line.

I agree. For ~$100 you are getting a flagship CPU in the A13 that should get 4-5 years of updates, water resistance, good camera and decent battery life if you are a light user(I turn on low power mode and it gets me through 5am-9pm on most days). Also as a bonus touch ID works way better than face id in our current world of face masks.

My wife has the original SE from a deal from Cricket a few years ago. This is a no brainer upgrade for her.
The battery *MAY* be enough for certain light users on some days, but not enough for the others.

4-5 hours of light usage may seem okay today on a perfect 100% healthy battery, but one thing people fail to consider is that smartphones can get warm, and during summer months your battery life can become much worse. If your battery health is at like 70% and your phone gets hot, then forget it, you'll only get around 2 hrs. And I know most people like to go outdoors and travel during summer.

Someone on a recent smartphone thread tried to convince me how 2GB of ram on an Android device is more than enough, blah blah blah. Of course it just depends on what kind of user you are. But I know this phone won't work for me, my wife, my kids, my parents, my uncle, my friends, except for my grandparents.

I still don't know how I wanna use it, maybe I'll keep it just to test iOS, and then after 6 months when it's unlocked I'll do something else.

But I guess I won't be able to do the "change plan to $30" when I activate it, or will I?

https://www.cricketwireless.com/activate.html

I think you could activate it before you get your phone but the account set up required the passcode and without having the SIM in your possession you can't truly get into the account management. The account management is how you downgrade to $30 plan

I don't know if anyone has been able to do it through CS without being in possession of the SIM.

cricket will send a separate email listing what numbers they could not confirm.
if they already shipped the order, most likely they already confirmed all the numbers; you don't have to do anything.

You can do an online live chat with a rep. I just did and checked that my porting status is completed. But did not received a shipment confirmation email yet.

People are changing names (some one else in family), different email, tweaking the address in interesting ways like adding a prefix, or a town name, apartment number etc.

I've been able to do get 6 orders since March to the same address but it's not been in a repeatable way so you might need to get creative and try a few options

When I was chatting with a rep, he did mention to me that they can merge 2 accounts in case I placed 2 separate orders. Though I did not specifically ask about getting the multi-line $30 discount, his response was in a way that made me think it is possible to get the discount at a later time.

heads up might not get the referral discount on both lines if accounts merged prior to referral posting, per cricket rep

Hello. I asked this question already but it didn't get answered. Can I get the $25 referral on each phone/line or is it just for one account? If I order 2 phones does each line get the $25 in 60 days?

I believe it's based on account and not phone. So if both phones are on the same account, you'll only get one referral. I could be wrong.
