recent previous deals for reference.

got this last time and so far so good.

something to watch out for during shipping is that they will send you the 10 piece kit and separate additional pieces. well, with those additional pieces you might get charged for faster shipping even if you have prime. I had to chat and put my foot down to get that additional shipping back.

i did have 2 different motion sensors trigger a tamper alarm in the middle of the night. a simple open and close of the sensor fixed that. so, at pairing when you pull the first time plastic battery tabs you might want to open and close the sensor.

ebay has good prices on additional pieces like 2 contacts for ~$25, motion for $20-25, and others.

you do not have to buy the gen2 first alert smoke alarm with the scanable QR code. you can use the gen1 without the QR code. ~$30 ebay

The Ecolink garage door tilt sensor can be had for $16-30 ebay.

when it comes to the dome sensor, it definitely is NOT worth $40. battery operated and not loud at all. they can sometimes be found on ebay for $20-30. i plan to hack a couple with a relay to trigger a siren horn.

if you get the ring cam, there is a known bricking issue where when you set them up and they immediately update the firmware they can brick. I did have to exchange one.

if you get the Lighting hub, there is a known issue where the hub will not communicate with older android cells during setup when it links to your cell to get your router ssid and password. if you have that happen just use a newer cell or tablet.

if you have keypads chime in addition to the hub they will be slightly out of sync (if even tells you this). sounds like an echoing effect.

if the keypad red wifi light comes on then you need to use the plugin range extender between the hub and keypad. rule of thumb if you have a good sized house you want to use one repeater in each room or so. additional can be had for $20-25 ebay.

i use the new ring keypad 2nd gen for both ring and smartthings. to differentiate between i put a transparent colored dot on the ones for smartthings.

Since I needed 10 contact sensors I went ahead and bought two Costco deals instead of this one but if what some are saying is true, then it sucks not being able to use the keypads with my existing system. How about the motion sensors? And can you add a 2nd hub (where the alarm goes off) to an existing system?

my understanding is that if you want a two pad system you have to buy this one. you can not buy two single pads from costco and make them work together.
Completely untrue.

Are you being serious? It's a QR code scan and the system is supposedly expandable hence the "add device" in ring app. I simply can't comprehend the limitation of the set only work with what comes in the same package but nothing else, doesn't make sense from both a functional or technical standpoint, heck even from marketing standpoint.

Do you have a source quoted such limitation?
It is not a limitation. The comment about the pads is simply incorrect. Ring is completely modular and expandable.

Very interesting so looks like you can add on as many sensors and smoke detectors etc.
Also looks like the retro kit can reuse existing prewired sensors and you can add on multiple retro kits for 8+ 8 zones. How is the battery life on these keypads and sensors etc? Can the base station be mounted in my basement ?
For the cellular back other than subscribing to the Ring Protect Plus subscription is any additional hardware needed?

If this is all true this rocks, I am not sure what I'd do if I went from $39 a month to $100 year for monitoring, shesh!

You can buy multiple kits and they can all work together as one system, but you can only use/need one base station for the overall system. You can keep the extra base station(s) as a backup or sell individually to recoup some cost. Or you can add a secondary or one-off system later somewhere. You just need a sensor or more, and no keypad necessary if you just want to use the Ring app for everything.

The retro fit works great. I purchased that separately for many of the sensors in my house. There were several that didn't work for some reason (I'll check them out later, as I would prefer the hard wire), so just used a wireless sensor instead. But the retrofit did save me from having to use dozen or more wireless sensors.

Battery life for keypads is around 6-months. You have plenty of heads up warning in the app for charging it back up.

You can put the base station wherever you'd like.

Cellular is already there and ready to go. Nothing else needed other than to subscribe to the plan, and it will be activated.

Got this over the Costco deal. 1x Extra keypad, 1x extra motion sensor, 2x extra contact sensor, plus free Echo Dot makes this a no brainer. Thanks1

Thanks for the response. If I put the base station in my basement do the key pads make the chime noise so we can hear when doors/windows are opened when upstairs?
I'd like to hardware the base station but that would require me to place it in the basement with the network and existing security system/cabling.

What do you mean keypad with your existing system ? Do you have an existing Ring system ?

100% you can't hook up two base stations together - they are separate.

How does cancel / return work for these things ?
I see they'll ship in 4 different orders - what happens if you cancel / return each order individually ?

Yes, the keypads have a speaker and has voice and chime sounds. You can turn those off for the keypads if you want to. The settings are very granular and let you customize each individual piece how you like it.

There is also a Dome siren you can purchase to have additional speakers/alarm presence in or outside the space.

There's a better deal if you don't really need the second keypad AND plan to buy an indoor camera. You can buy the 8-piece with a free echo show 5 and an indoor camera for $195. Then just buy 4 additional contact sensors off ebay for like $50. Your total would be $245 (or $200 excluding the indoor camera). So same price but you get an echo show 5 instead of an echo dot.

Apologies for the newbie question: why would two keypads be valuable? For two-story homes maybe?
for many reasons:

a. if you live alone you can have one at front entrance and the other one in the bedroom. arm the whole house with motion sensors (better protection than just window door), and disarm without having to run all the way to the front entrance.

b. have one in the garage and one inside the house, that way you can arm/disarm from garage.

i am sure that in both cases the app can probably do both, but for old folks it's simple to push real large buttons.

To be honest, I don't even use the keypad.
