OK... this is odd. I just went to register with PCWorld Store before my purchase, so that it would be seen/accessible in my account. I know for fact I never registered with them before, yet it said my email address was already in use (ie. taken) by an account there.

I then went to the "Forgot password" link in order to 'reclaim' my own email address.
It sent me an email with a link to change password, which I did, but I noticed on the pre-filled account boxes it listed me as in the UK. I'm in the US, so apparently someone in the UK used my email addy, not sure for how long.
I get constant account signup emails from people in Ireland, India, Philippines, the east coast of the US. I wouldn't worry about it. Nothing has ever happened to me yet. Just annoying people either mis typing an email, or using what they think is a fake email but it's actually my own. Very annoying.

Bought it to put on a VM. Was thinking of adding a Win 10 Pro VM, but at $40 bucks for a license, I decided to set it up.

Thanks.

Do I need to have Windows 7/8 installed first and then install Windows 10 as an upgrade, or can I just install a clean Windows 10 and then use the old key?
Both ways

A note for anyone who thinks they're ok with their current Windows 10 or doing an upgrade from free—that free upgrade gets locked to your hardware as I just found out when I swapped out my motherboard and was no longer "activated". The retail code from this deal is transferable

Step 1. Buy a windows 7 pro license on ebay for $1-3
Step 2. Install windows 10 pro and use win7 key as upgrade
Step 3. Send 50% that i saved you to me
Step 4. You are welcome

ebay is one place to look, deals are not posted just because you arrived at the site, you have to actively look for them.

you can also check other sites, and sites outside of the US [gamers-outlet.net]. just make sure you are not using your credit card . . . one must always use a gift card or something equivalent.

you can also search CL for old PC boxes that came with Win7 . . . be creative
Lol. You know simply searching for the Win7 oem label and looking at the photos of the codes works free?

Bought one and downloaded a 18m file and code. I don't have to install the windows pro (haven't decided which PC to upgrade yet) right now but anything in the future, correct?

This is fake one. Same as one you can find at ebay.
Now please enlighten me as to why PCworld would risk their reputation by providing a gateway for a fly by night actor selling illegitimate keys? They have been doing this for quite a while now. I stumbled across this offer almost a year ago. Do you think Microsoft would allow this to happen for long? The keys are legit. They have just been purchased in bulk, so they can then be resold for such a low price.

The original PC World post has a few more details on this deal :
https://www.pcworld.com/article/3...t-off.html [pcworld.com]

"This offer, good through November, is for a Microsoft-licensed retail version of Windows 10 Pro, and not an OEM version."

"PCWorld's partner, Cleverbridge, is able to secure great discounts by going directly to software vendors and publishers, buying licenses in bulk, and then working with safe, secure brands (like PCWorld) to sell the software directly to consumers. Please note this deal is for an unlimited lifetime license for a single PC."

So, anyone have any experience with Cleverbridge ? I'm inclined to think this sounds like a great way to end up with either a Volume or gray market license key - which may work great forever, or may not. =)
Cleverbridge sounded familiar so I searched my legacy email boxes.. Turns out, I've used them maybe half a dozen times from 2008 onwards. Lots of different software companies have chosen them for distribution of their software. Whether these particular keys are legit or not, I cannot say, but Cleverbridge itself does not seem shady in the least. I hope that helps.

Lol I can't believe you people are falling for this. It's just the same OEM codes you can get for $3 on ebay. At that point you might as well use HWID to activate it for free. Microsoft isn't seeing a penny of the money either way.
PCworld? It is a legit company.

OEM will only upgrade to a OEM license the one from PCWorld is retail so its transferable.

Does anyone know if there is an issue of buying a license today but not using or activating it for a few months... won't be building new for a bit (... If only the Ryzen 5 5600 would be available in a "few" months).
