The newest addition is Piper, our daughter's hamster:

This was one of the last pictures I took of Zeus over 11 years later when he was about 15 years old, shortly before I had to have him put to sleep.
At that time it had been over 30 years since a time when I didn't have a cat.
I made the decision then to not get any more pets, at least for the foreseeable future. I had hoped Zeus would be around for a few years longer to get me closer to when I retire, but some form of cancer shortened that dream. It has been tough to be without a cat around the house but I'm still not ready to bring home another one, though I have found myself checking out the local shelter cats online occasionally. I may change my mind someday, but one thing I want to do is travel a lot more after I retire and I don't want to have a pet back home to worry about.
Plus, if I'm being honest, the pain of losing them seems to get tougher rather than easier as I get older, and not sure how willing I am to go through it again. It has taken a lot out of me every time I have to let one go.
I've posted here each time I have lost one of my cats and I posted in the same thread about Zeus after I had him put to sleep but didn't realize right away that the thread was in the Archived Lounge so only a couple of you saw it at all. When I noticed that I just didn't have the energy to make a new thread that would show up here in the Lounge.
These are my threads in the archived thread memorializing Corey, Tugger, and Zeus:
Final Farewell to my Kitty
The Hardest Part Of Pet Ownership....

The end of their intense short lives is hard to get through, but they surely bring a lot of joy during their time with us.
