What?! What a shocker?! You said the $1K Samsung Galaxy S20 5G with the launch price of $999.99 is better than the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G. You are comparing apples to oranges. Who said this phone was a flagship? Samsung never said it was a "flagship". Samsung sells a billion various models from budget to expensive flagship.
Where is the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S20 5G deal where people are paying $180 out of pocket with no plan? I missed that deal.
It IS fair to compare this phone to the S20 FE, which can be had for around $200 with trade in. That's arguably the better phone (better camera, wireless charging), but does suffer the phantom touch issue. And that deal requires you trade in a decent phone. You can't get it with a generic garbage phone.
You can't compare by "retail" which are made up numbers for items always on sale.
In any case, For <$100 (or as low as free), the A71 is a fantastic phone. If there were a free or $100 iPhone 11, that would be a better buy, but there isn't (nor will there ever be).

Assume it takes like 13 months between system updates just like from 10 to 11, it will leave the Pixel 4a 5G with getting 2 system updates over their 3 years. The Pixel 4a 5G came out when Android 11 just came out. Think about that.
Pixel 4a 5G (android 11...... Sept.) 2020 <--- came with
android 12 ..... Nov 2021 <-- 1 system update
android 13....... Dec 2022 <--- 2nd system update
The 3rd system update won't happen before November 2023.... That equates to 2 system updates unless Google starts putting out system updates less than 1 year. Do you believe Google will start putting out system updates in like every 10 months?
My P2XL had 3 OS updates on top of Oreo 8 (8+9+10+11) before I recently retired it.
As with any technology updates, the roadmap to consumer's hands have a lot faster lead time than when your individual phone receives it from the Google servers.
The Android 11 developers image was already out in the public domain for review back in Feb 2020 and released in September 2020 NOT 13 months from Android 10 which had similar timeline in 2019.

After trading in an ancient smartphone (HTC inspire), I paid about $150 for the A71 + galaxy buds that were included. No contract extension, no activation fees, no extra charges.
If you have an old smartphone that you can't get rid of, you'd be a fool not to do this. Where else are you going to get a new 5G smartphone for $150? Even if you don't like it or don't plan to keep it, you can turn a decent profit from selling it.

Get a grip.
I am not using the phone - it is a paper weight.
