Wow great deal. You could use the S20 as a stepping stone to the S21 by trading it in next year. You may even get more than $400 trade in credit.

It's unlocked, but you need to stay in fi for 90 days to get your $600 discount

I downloaded the Fi app, activated the SIM and ported my number into Fi, then downloaded and installed all the updates (about 4-5 for me). I was fully activated and number successfully ported within 20 minutes which is how long it took to download and install all the updates. By this time, the phone was low on battery so I charged it, all the while the Fi SIM was still in the phone. I let it charge for a few hours, because I figured to let the SIM sit in it in case Google's system was slow and so it can see that everything is set up.

After about 6-7 hours, I had all updates, and phone fully charged, and I went and did a factory reset, which of course includes deleting the Fi app with the reset. While it was booting, I removed the Fi SIM and placed it into the S20 box, and inserted my main carrier SIM. I haven't looked back since, nor have I gotten any notifications from the credit card that I used about any $600 charge (the discount amount). My first bill is scheduled to appear tomorrow 1/15 so I'll know then if I broke the deal, which could be too soon to tell but I also don't know how quickly Google enforces their promo charge if I had already broke it.
I wonder if you will see the days counting down from 90 in your account tomorrow?

If are doing anything cpu/gpu intensive the S21/S21+ is substantially faster than the pixel 5. Also, if a large screen is important to you, the pixel 5 is quite small.

I guess the only current, flagship level, factory unlocked phone with a microsd card and broad carrier support in the US is the Note 20 Ultra. If it's replacement also drops it, there will be none left.

Makes sense.
Because you said "no microSD no deal" and then said you would buy Pixel 5, that's why I asked.

From another similar deal, it looks like there's a 90 day countdown timer that tells you where you are in the 90-day requirement. Someone mentioned putting their Fi sim in a regular phone and it stopped the clock.

Could you see if you have such a thing in your account and if the timer is still going?

I activated yesterday and mine hasn't started counting yet either. It seems like it is a day behind since it didn't show my phone as activated until today. So I am hoping I will see it tomorrow.

I just checked and don't see any kind of count down just yet. I also haven't gotten my bill, and based on a quick Google image search of how the count down looks like, it is displayed along the "Current Cycle" info, which I also don't see. I'll report back tomorrow once the bill and assumingly "Current Cycle" info is generated.

go to google fi app
Click on billing at the bottom
Click on FI savings (in the middle of screen)
Click on IN progress
Click on $600 off Samsung S20

It will show you what conditions you meet and it will start counting down from 90 days.

Why people here refrain from switching to Fi. Is it a bad network? Why would current provider be better than Fi?

I don't know all the reasons but here are a few
  • Compared to other mvno's, Fi's pricing is very high
  • Fi customer service gets terrible reviews
  • Not everyone lives in place where Fi has good coverage
  • Some people are on combined/family plans where moving one phone to Fi would be cost prohibitive
  • Some people are just happy with their current carrier

Biggest reason is price I think. Data is really expensive on Fi.

I am not switching but keeping it open 90 days without data usage.
