It's hilarious how paranoid some people are, frantically hiding their Fi sim in their sock drawer or under a rock in the backyard - as if someone at Google is sitting there monitoring their every move. Get a grip.
Usually google fi will notify you are breaking the terms & if you switch back the sim within 24 hours then you are okay.
Sometimes they flat out void the promo for using the sim in another phone.
I installed it when I got the phone and Fi SIM, and used the app the port in a burner number and activate service. I then installed all the system updates (about 4-5), then once there were no more updates, I did a factory reset, which also removes the Fi app. I have not downloaded it since.
Just ordered mine this morning.
Icing on the cake would be if Google Fi phone purchase will qualify for their quarterly 5%.

I use Mint mobile.
My Fi SIM has not seen the light of day since I removed it. It came inserted in the phone already so I activated via the Fi app, then the rest was history. If I do break the promo, I'll report back. So far, I'm in the clear.
Ordered yesterday and the phone shipped out today. That was quick. Thanks, OP. I am excited as this should be the biggest performance upgrade over MotoG5.
