Wow great deal. You could use the S20 as a stepping stone to the S21 by trading it in next year. You may even get more than $400 trade in credit.

It's unlocked, but you need to stay in fi for 90 days to get your $600 discount

I'm guessing they go by the IMEI number of the device the SIM card is tied to. It makes sense this way to me bc it's really difficult to see how Fi can keep track of the device's activity (with Fi app bring deleted & FR)

You've got me so tempted to follow your instruction steps.
Up to you. Just make sure to not put the Fi sim in any other phone. If you take it out, leave it out. I haven't even put it back into my S20 for that matter. I have 68 days to go and have not yet broken the promo $600 discount. Once the counter reaches 0, I'll wait an extra day (just in case) and cancel Fi.

I appreciate smallpenny leading the charge, but is anyone following the same method using a T-Mobile SIM?

I want to take the leap, but posts like this and this [reddit.com] have me concerned.

If it's any help, I'm using a Mint Mobile SIM, which is a T-Mobile MVNO.

Yes, that is the plan for me. I am staying with Google Fi for 3 months and then going to evaluate less expensive pre-paid service. Inclined towards Xfinity mobile or Mint.
Here's what I'm trying to figure out. Why are people removing the Fi SIM or using a "throw away" number and waiting the 90 days? What's wrong with porting your number and porting away after the 90 days? Is there some "gotcha" in the process or some other problem? I'm curious what the risks are. Thank!

* If your data usage is high it is fairly expensive service
* If your area isn't well covered by Fi networks, it is an issue
* Some people are nervous about trusting Fi with their number since their CS is so terrible.

What issues are there with your number and Fi's customer service?

I am not sure if it is really valid but some people are concerned they won't be able to get their number back from Fi when they leave.

As for me, it feels a hassle to port in and out in 90 days with a number I have used for so long. Also, I am on a yearly prepaid plan so if I leave, I lose all the credits for the remainder of the year.

Just ported from NumberBarn, completed in maybe 3 minutes. Still waiting on the tracker to update, but that should pop up in 24 hours according to others on here.

1. skip the deal because it's a hassle for you.

2. get a temporary number use with this s20 deal, use 2 phones

3. get temporary number, risk putting in another sim (your current number) like others have done.

I'd wait for the promo to move from "In progress" to "Earned" (this will happen after the counter reaches 0).

#2 is exactly what I am doing now. I also enabled call forwarding and tethering on my old phone for calls and data. So practically speaking I can start using the new phone on day one with manageable hassle.

I have bad news for anyone who is using another SIM once the Fi SIM is activated, as long as the Fi SIM is not used with another phone.

I actived the S20 with Fi SIM and used it for about one week. Then factory reset the phone and use my Tmobile SIM in it for about another week. Fi SIM is in my draw, never used in another phone. The days counting is normal, 74 more days.

Today, I chatted with the Fi representative about my Fi credit not applied to my monthly bill. He or she particularly mentioned that the device was not active with Google Fi. Here is the transcript of the chat:
I suggest you to please resume your services and stay active with Fi to get Fi credits.
Yes, however I see that the device is not active with Google Fi.
Please inform member to activate Fi services on Samsung device.
From our end it shows that member activate the Fi services on different device model.
If he is not activate the fi services on Samsung device you will be charged $600.

Based on my understanding, Google may not know what network service is used in the Samsung device, but they definitely know it is NOT used in Fi.

Has anyone seen a post like this where the non-Fi SIM was from a carrier other than T-Mobile? I saw it suggested elsewhere in this thread that because Fi runs on T-Mobile's network, Google might be able to tell if you switch to another T-Mo carrier, which might make sense. But from my own experience with an n of 1, I did the Pixel 4a 5g deal on Black Friday, and used my Visible SIM and had no problems, so I am wondering if this issue is specific to T-Mobile.
I am curious if I missed a warning from someone on another network.
