Wow great deal. You could use the S20 as a stepping stone to the S21 by trading it in next year. You may even get more than $400 trade in credit.

It's unlocked, but you need to stay in fi for 90 days to get your $600 discount

That is most likely a typo. It should be January 5th, 2021, which is around the time this deal began.

Someone contacted Fi support and they said it is not a typo, but then again Fi support is not great

I am an existing Tello customer. I was going to get this phone and move back to Tello after 90 days but I saw that 'Samsung phones designed for Fi don't support Sprint's network' . So it became a deal breaker for me.
How can this be? Fi literally uses Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular networks.

Really tired of all the conjecture here. The terms and conditions say ZILCH about keeping the phone on Fi, or about using a different SIM in it. If they charge you, just contact your credit card company and show them the T&C's, which you followed to the letter. Done.

To be safe, I'm switching my only payment method to a virtual cc with $1 on it after my last month of service charges. Good luck, Fi, for violating the law by trying to charge me via terms and conditions that don't exist. They won't be able to.

The only drawback is they can delete or stop your Google account, so if anyone used their main account then stopping payment is a very bad idea. Many such horror stories on Reddit.

I used a secondary Gmail. Don't really care. This is also open to litigation if they violate their own T&C's.

A lot of anecdotal "I read something on Reddit" but no firsthand knowledge here.

Really, why would Google Fi care if you get the $399 S20, then upgrade to a S21 and throw the Fi sim in there? As long as you keep paying for Fi for 90 days, what's the difference, the money they get is exactly the same.

Or your $399 S20 is lost, stolen, or dropped or damaged and no longer functional, and you have to buy a new phone. You continue to faithfully use the Fi service in the new phone for the remainder of the 90 days. Why would they stick it to you for $600 because you had to buy a new phone? Wouldn't make any sense.

With Fi,things don't have to make sense, they just do and as a customer you have almost no redressal mechanism, their outsourced CS is not empowered to do anything and there is now way to reach their level 2 support.

I've been updating with my experiences multiple times in this thread and am back to do it again.

To answer your question: YES, what you mentioned is exactly what I did.
1. Received the phone with Fi SIM already in the phone.
2. During setup, I only connected to WiFi, then skipped through everything else.
3. Once I got to the home screen, I opened the play store and downloaded the Fi app -> port in -> activated service.
4. Once port-in is complete and service has been confirmed activated in the app, I proceeded to download and installed all system updates.
5. Once all updates were completely installed, I factory reset and removed Fi sim while phone was restarting and insert my Mint mobile SIM.

My 2nd bill cycle just generated 2 days ago. I have not been charged $600 or been notified of any action that I broke the promo. I've checked the credit card associated with my Fi account and nothing.

See above.

I've had my Fi sim removed, and replaced with my pre-paid Mint Mobile SIM since day one. No issues. I have also posted multiple updates along the way.

I've even replied to one person that asked why I'm taking the risk. And my reply is simple: take one for the team and to answer and confirm speculation you mentioned - some say it doesn't work, some say it does, etc etc etc until the cows come home.

My Fi SIM has been removed and placed into the S20 box since day one. It has not been touched nor seen the light of day ever since. More than happy to answer any more questions.

My bill is $26.69 for 2 bill cycles now. I received and activated the S20 on January 13th.

Edit: Clarifying "speculative" comment

Edit #2 and will add the edit here: Google DOES care if you insert the FI sim into another phone. As long as the Fi SIM is not inserted into another phone AFTER activating it with the Fi-purchased phone, you are good to go until after satisfying the 90 days. Once the "keep service for X days is over", then inserting the Fi into another phone might be ok. But the Fi SIM absolutely cannot be inserted into another phone during the promo criteria period. To me and how I reason it, this is the most likely culprit in people breaking the promo; they probably took another SIM and inserted into the Fi phone (not a problem), and then inserted the Fi SIM into another phone thinking the service actually has to stay connected to a phone (breaks promo). The Fi SIM can go sink into the ocean as long as it's not in another phone and service is continued to be paid for for the criteria period of 90 days.
