Menards is clearing out the Kreg Micro Pocket drill guide for $39.99. Buy it as part of the bag sale https://slickdeals.net/f/14747171-menards-in-stores-offer-everything-you-can-fit-in-a-shopping-bag-15-off-in-select-states-exclusions-may-apply?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo1 so it is $33.99 with 15% off.

With a 25% smaller hole diameter, the Micro Pocket™ Drill Guide lets you create more compact, low-profile pocket holes in the same joinery applications, but also tackle smaller projects, thinner stock and tighter repair applications, where standard pocket holes simply can't go. It is designed for use with the Kreg Jig® or Kreg Jig® Master System.

This is mostly of value to those that have already gotten the K4 or K5 pocket hole jigs.

I picked this up with my K5 the other day. It's mainly for 1/2 inch material, and since I'm building new drawers, it's great for that. Note that you will need their 3/4" pan head screws instead of their 1" screws like you would use with the larger jig.

You can't order online, but need to go to the store, pick it off the shelf, and put in the 15% off bag to get this price.

Shopping at Menards is like stepping back in time. They are basically a general store (who buys milk and Hungry Man while also buying screws?), they use mail-in rebates extensively, and they do really gimmicky things like "everything you fit into this bag is 15% off!" Plus, half the tools are straight trash and are Menards-only house brands, and the entire store is really poorly lit and organized. Then in-store pickup is treated hilariously with a "processing fee" for an employee to grab the item, plus you have to get your item at the very back of their wearhouse-sized store, meaning you save no time at all. It fact, it usually takes longer, and you pay for the privilege.

That said, their selection is ridiculously good, and their prices are usually great, so if you can brave going in there, you can usually get some good deals.

Went to Menards for $10 worth of hardware and the power went out while I was there. You would think they would have back up power for at least the cash registers, nope. I go to the service counter and ask can I just make the purchase online and show you the receipt? They say sure but you have to pay a $3 service charge. $10 + $3 = $13. I ask the alternative and they say pay cash with no receipt. They figured the tax on paper by hand and said thanks. They kept a list of the sales to ring in later. When I went out the door they had a half dozen different color gasoline generators on the sidewalk and a bunch of new extension cords running into the store. They only managed to get one running. Luckily nothing in my purchase had to be returned. Wish we had a Home Depot in town.

Is there anyone out there that has used this and can recommend it? I hate to spend 40 bucks on something that will just sit in a drawer instead of buying some extra screws or another clamp of some sort. I have the K3 and K4 so I'm wondering if this would really help get me anywhere. Why couldn't I use the K3/K4 to make drawers...or is there something I'm missing. What other projects would lend itself to the micro pocket jig vs standard one. Thanks in advance!

Advantages of this over the normal blue drill block are:
  • smaller holes w/smaller screws are easier to plug and hide
  • can put side by side holes in smallish pieces
  • holes are easier/quicker to drill
That being said, and since they'll both work in 1/2" stock, I'd say that you probably don't need this unless you are building something with 1/2" stock and need to plug the holes because you can't hide them on the back, underneath, etc.

Normal size pocket screws are too large to bury sufficiently in thin stock for easily plugging the holes.

Isn't that true for many of the tools we buy? Peace Yet, we still continue to buy them.

Yes exactly "IN FOR ONE", "JUST IN CASE","WHY NOT", but the cool thing about this particular tool is that you can use it to build more, and bigger and better drawers! I already have two K3's so I'm thinking maybe I'll resist. But it will probably nag at me and I won't be able to resist after a few days and I'll go get it. Menards is like 10 mins down the road.

Very little says 'junk' more than pocket hole joinery for drawers. And worse when used for 1/2" material that you find in the cheapest of cabinets and furniture that is more dependent on the rabbit groove that loses drawer space in the back.

No pocket hole will ever replace the strength of quality joinery.... especially for moving parts like drawers. At the top would arguably be dovetail joints that have been around since the Egyptians for a valid reason. Pocket holes could strengthen glued dovetail or even blind dovetail, but so do pin nails.

PS: This tool, like most, does have it's applications, but will never replace craftsmanship.
