Be careful that you link this to the correct account. I bought this for my daughter and linked it to my account and she could not access any of the extra content.
What's w/that one review that said it's not the 'right version' .... I have two kids that want minecraft, one has it (it uses java) and the other doesn't but is begging me for her own version on her laptop. If I get this will it work? Total newb re: minecraft...

well, you should be able to install it on both computer even with java edition.
i have the windows 10 edition, and able to install it on 10 computers by using your login (if the game is activated on your account)
Also, it is best to create a microsft account for kids, so they can play on their account.

This one is crossplay with consoles. The Java one is not. The Java one has mods and so there is more to do. If you can install this to multiple PCs you still won't be able to play it using multiple accounts at once.
Don't know anything other than already paying for Mineraft PE for their phones. Now their friend is playing on PC (Java).
So I know I have to pony up more money for the Java edition. Question is, I have 2 kids, do I need two licenses/keys?
Really hate having to pay and pay and pay....

Lol. You have kids. Get used to the pay and pay and pay....
To answer your question, yes, you will need two licenses if they wish to play at the same time, or with each other.
For Bedrock edition, you do not have to pay for multiple licenses. To do this you need to use the same Microsoft account on each computer to install Bedrock, and then login using a different Xbox live account. I've successfully set this up multiple times.

Thanks. Problem is the kids want to play with their friend who is using the Java PC version, otherwise they already have their phone versions and the xbox one.

Can you access any world/game that you have on mobile/switch and start playing it on your PC? or even visit it?
