They would be my hero if they came out with an Acrobat-like program. Imagine paying $50 for an Acrobat Pro-like app instead of the highway robbery prices Adobe charges!
Finally somebody took advantage of Adobe's greed.

I guess my real question is how often do they release a major version (upgrade)? Is this the first version. If so, will there be a 2.0? No where does it say it's a software with free lifetime upgrades.
I bought Affinity Designer back in 2016 and they've been upgrading v1.xxx ever since. As each new application comes out it is matched in version to the others. So the first release of Affinty Designer was 1.0, Affinity Photo was actually 1.3.1, and Affinity Publisher was 1.7.
I would guess they'll have a free v1.9 series for all the apps and then charge for the 2.0 release. If that is what happens for their entire suite then Designer would have seen 6 years of free upgrades, Photo about 4 years, and Publisher about 2 years (roughly).
Whether they give free upgrades to people who have purchased in the last 6 months or last 12 months, or whatever is anyone's guess. So far none of their Affinity apps have ever seen a paid upgrade.
I've had Designer for a year or two and like it. It does almost everything I need.
I still have a copy of the last Adobe Illustrator version before they started charging a monthly fee that I use for Live Tracing and Warping text. If Affinity Designer ever adds these tools I would be fine never using Illustrator again.
I just bought Affinity Photo. I may install it on my laptop for some quick editing but still use Lightroom for most of the big projects. Thanks OP for posting.
I use SumatraPDF for my daily driver just opening PDFs for reading as it's extremely lightweight and FAST, but FoxIt when I actually need to add or edit things. Haven't touched Acrobat in years.
Did you pick-up any add-on apps that are also on sale? Are they worth it?
I haven't bought any add-ons as I haven't needed them. OTOH, I haven't heard any complaints either. If their hardcover workbooks were on sale I'd probably grab them too just for reference.
In past discussions on SD, people have mentioned they like Luminar as an alternative to Lightroom. I've used Luminar 3 a little bit and grabbed it when it was free but I haven't used it enough to see how well it stacks up against Lightroom.
I've got PhotoShop, LR and Luminar. Luminar is alot like LR in use. I use all 3. I use Luminar mainly for Portrait work. It has some nice presets for the face which are quicker and easier to use then LR or PS. If I was to use the Photo for an exacting repeatability, I would use Adobe. For less acting like Portfolios or IG Luminar would be great. I like Luminar try it.

Art Text from BeLight might handle all your text needs and more. It used to go on sale relatively often, but I haven't been paying attention lately:

I've also got the On1 Raw package - haven't had time to really exercise it versus Luminar. I used to use Aperture until the bitter end when it no longer was supported.
Long time user of both Photo and Designer, and recently added Publisher . . . They're all great programs. I use the first two on my iPad Pro as well, and they work great.
Paid full price (or maybe $35) each, $25 for these is an absolute steal. For under $100 you could get the entire suite for your computer and iPad, and then you only have to worry about paying your monthly subscription payment, which is $0 per month. :-)

Would be interested in your experiences comparing between Illustrator and Designer.
Especially for the fashion industry etc.

If my primary use is occasionally making flyers for my organizations, do you think getting just Designer will suffice? Publisher seems to be more geared towards multi-page designs.

Not sure how helpful I can be. I use mostly basic functions: pen tool, shapes, text, layers, layer effects. Adding text to images, separating colors in a design for screen printing, etc. Both programs seem to be similar for these kinds of things. I'm sure the updated / subscription version of Illustrator has extra and more advanced tools.
For my basic needs I'm happy with Designer because I wouldn't be able to justify the cost of the monthly subscription.

It is browser based and free.
