For most people these Elgato capture devices are way overpriced.

Just buy some generic crap at Amazon like this one I own: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08JBZVQCV

1080p60 is fine for 99% of folks there in streamland. Plug-n-play, Mac, PC and Android phones.
Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic.
They all have it now.
Just to give fair warning for Nikon users.... this is a garbage solution. It's free, but its garbage. Nikon software only outputs at 1024 x 768 pixels (XGA).

Good price on a solid product! I think I paid almost twice the amount last year as inventory was wiped out but well worth the money.

My understanding is that Canon offers free software for their DSLRs so that you don't need a hardware device like this to use your dslr as a webcam (eg for videoconf). I don't know if it has same bells and whistles and/or quality, tho.

I've got a Nikon, though, so have been eyeing this (for other needs, too) so I just may bite!

Thanks for posting!

Nikon and canon both have webcam utility tools so just go to their site, make sure your camera is compatible and download the software. you will need a usb cable and dummy battery. Also make sure your camera has a clean hdmi output and you should be fine.

Is there any major difference between using this, an Elgato HD60 S, or an Elgato HD60S+? Wondering if anyone has done extensive research or testing. Thanks!

I think this is mostly for connecting like a camera to your pc for basically a higher resolution/quality webcam. The other ones you mentioned iirc are more for streaming like a console or something to twitch. Read the direct pages for them for more info

There's a significant difference in picture quality between even a 1080p Elgato device and one of these (I have and use both). A Cam Link 4k is the deal right now if you don't need a pass-through capable device or 4k hdr.

The HD60 S and other devices are more for streaming from a console since they have hdmi pass through with virtually no added lag. They are also useful if you're capturing from a good camera for a live stream and you want to see the camera output on a secondary screen.

If you just need to capture a clean hdmi feed to use with something like OBS the Cam Link 4k is a better choice since it's smaller and cheaper and can take a 4k signal that you can crop/resize for your stream.

Absolutely no one cares watching your stream of those differences. You know this. I know this. The impact is none existent to the end viewer.
