For most people these Elgato capture devices are way overpriced.

Just buy some generic crap at Amazon like this one I own: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08JBZVQCV

1080p60 is fine for 99% of folks there in streamland. Plug-n-play, Mac, PC and Android phones.

Just to give fair warning for Nikon users.... this is a garbage solution. It's free, but its garbage. Nikon software only outputs at 1024 x 768 pixels (XGA).

I have a Sony a7rii. Anyone use this with that cam or one of the cheap ones? I'd also like to like record video directly to my laptop with it.

I got the Elgato Cam Link 4K around March or April 2020. I use it with my Canon 80D DSLR for zoom teleconferencing (if you want to have "clean hdmi" you can press the "info" button a couple of times and icons will disappear BUT you can only use manual focus and you must turn off auto focus on the lens to remove the little square focusing box to have a clean display.) . Almost every time I start to use it with Zoom very strange colors, or complete purple or green screens appear. I have to unplug it and re-plug it in several times and it eventually resolves. Anybody else have this problem? Anybody know how to resolve it? Thank you! Otherwise, it's a pretty good product. It may be overpriced, I am receiving a cheaper one this week and I'll let people know if it works well if they're curious.

This could be hardware related, or some sort of HDMI handshake issue between the camera and the capture card. If that's the case, you could try updating the firmware on the camera to see if that helps, and/or try a better quality HDMI cable, as some of the cheap ones with super thin conductors don't handle 4k well. You could potentially confirm this by changing your camera's HDMI output to 1080p rather than 4k to see if you have better luck.

Failing that, It's less than a year old, so it's still under warranty, I'd call the manufacturer and have them send you a replacement, to see if you have better luck with a different card. If you don't the issue is with your camera.

I used those $20 USB HDMI devices and the Sony webcam utility app and while they do work, the framerate and resolution is subpar. I also used an Avermedia game capture card that had 1080p60 quality which was a level above the aforementioned products. This Elgato 4k capture card is definitely a level above all those other devices and it's just plug and play.

Is it overpriced for what it is? Sure. But it does its singular job very well and without fail. It's small, compact and it just works. If you have a 4k camera like a Sony A6000 series camera or better, you will definitely find value in this. Right after the lockdown happened, these were impossible to get and were marked up like crazy on the used market.

This has been $112 for weeks. Lowest price, maybe, but not really a omg I've gotta buy it deal. Not saying it isn't great! Probably is! Just... it's about the typical price point.

Feel like there's a lot of these misleading (typical prices being sensationalized) on slick deals anymore

Sony's (and probably others) don't support the new Macbook M1 (since it needs ARM drivers not x64) so we all need capture cards again Frown

Also, the Sony one runs at horrible framerate and resolution, far, far worse than 1080P60

Thank you all for the Comments! I was on the fence about buying the Elgato and was waiting for it to go on sale, but after all the research here via the comments at other sites-Youtube and here, I went ahead and bought an "Upgraded Audio Video Capture Card" {High Definition of Audio Video Capture Cards } - input max resolution HDMI 4K (3840×2160@60Hz), output max resolution USB 3.0 (1920×1080@30Hz). Record high definition 60 fps videos directly in your hard drive with no delay. You can enjoy the cam link 1080p 60fps for $23.99 plus tax. Brand Generis at Amazon. Thanks again! Applause

He says the cheap chinese ones can do 1080p60 but they can't. They're 1080p30. There are a bunch of comments asking for the 60fps firmware but no actual answer provided

Wonder if the Atomos has legit 60 or if this guy didn't even verify correct fps. I have one of the cheap cards and can send out 60 frames to OBS but the output has doubled/skipped frames. Only 25-30 unique frames per second.

List of cameras supported at 4K capture. GoPro is not supported in 4K.

(edit: Turns out most GoPros max out at 1080p anyways - when previewing. Exceptions are Hero8 Black with the "Media Mod" adapter and perhaps Hero9)

Back in May I started doing a daily YouTube stream with equipment I had on hand -- a 720p laptop web cam and a Bluetooth headset/mic using OBS software and IP Cam software. Later I switched to using iVCam for wifi video with a cell phone cam and sound from the BT headset -- the video was much better. Later iVCam added wifi sound to their app but it broke after an update in November so I switched to DroidCam OBS. That's what I am using now with a Pixel phone for wifi video and sound, a small tripod and phone holder with a hot shoe attachment bought on Ebay.

I thought of going the Elgato route when it wasn't available. I bought a micro HDMI cable and tested my Panasonic camera (not compatible with Panny software) to make sure it would go an hour without cutting off -- it would. It was a beautiful picture on the monitor. But YouTube reduces the resolution of my current 1280x720@60 phone output slightly anyway and I am very satisfied with the video quality.

Absolutely no one cares watching your stream of those differences. You know this. I know this. The impact is none existent to the end viewer.
Not everybody uses these for streaming. I use it for a video input from my DSLR to record direct to disk for some video production, and the quality difference is extremely noticeable.

It's not going to replace a professional dedicated recorder but it's the most effective way to get darn near any video camera into a computer at great quality without buying a dedicated card that requires a desktop.

I used to have this and a generic one from ebay (you can also get it from amazon, but I'm boycotting Amazon). The camlink is better, but the $20 one from ebay was good enough so I sold the camlink. I think people should buy the $20 one. If you don't like it enough, you can buy the $100 elgato. Nothing lost really.
Between bandwidth, compression, etc. The $20 was good enough for me and a lot better than web cams and our phone camera. I paired the video capture card with a sony A7Sii and an A7III.

edit: I also have a atomos ninja v if I need to capture stuff at quality. I used the generic $20 device mostly for zoom calls..
