For most people these Elgato capture devices are way overpriced.

Just buy some generic crap at Amazon like this one I own: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08JBZVQCV

1080p60 is fine for 99% of folks there in streamland. Plug-n-play, Mac, PC and Android phones.

Just to give fair warning for Nikon users.... this is a garbage solution. It's free, but its garbage. Nikon software only outputs at 1024 x 768 pixels (XGA).

I got the Elgato Cam Link 4K around March or April 2020. I use it with my Canon 80D DSLR for zoom teleconferencing (if you want to have "clean hdmi" you can press the "info" button a couple of times and icons will disappear BUT you can only use manual focus and you must turn off auto focus on the lens to remove the little square focusing box to have a clean display.) . Almost every time I start to use it with Zoom very strange colors, or complete purple or green screens appear. I have to unplug it and re-plug it in several times and it eventually resolves. Anybody else have this problem? Anybody know how to resolve it? Thank you! Otherwise, it's a pretty good product. It may be overpriced, I am receiving a cheaper one this week and I'll let people know if it works well if they're curious.
If your vido card is using pci-4 bus change it to pci-3 in bios. This should solve most of the problem for elgato 4k.

Before doing that tho, change your hdmi cable first to see if it fix the problem.

Does anyone know if there's a monitor that records that's not expensive? Recording quality is semi important but don't really care what the screen resolution/quality is like.

I've seen some go for $400 ish for photo equipment world. I've looked on wish and those types of sites.
I am not sure what you are talking about. In regard to elgato 4k, recording is software related. Elgato 4k is design for streaming on your computer.

If you are want a monitor to hook up on top of your camera, there are sub $200 monitors. However most of these do not have a record function. The expensive verions like the ninja monitor have record function. With that said your camera can record video without the monitor doing it.

Nikon and canon both have webcam utility tools so just go to their site, make sure your camera is compatible and download the software. you will need a usb cable and dummy battery. Also make sure your camera has a clean hdmi output and you should be fine.

This tbh. Bought one for <$10 and it's fine if all you're doing is streaming.

Don't be ridiculous. Are they perfectly acceptable for most people that don't really care about video quality? Absolutely. But don't lie to people about them being equal to or better than the elgato because that's just not true in any way.
This is what i don't get. Why are people spending $10-20 on a capture card for their $1k+ camera. Why degrade your $1k camera video quality.

Depends on whether you're recording and need the highest quality or if you're streaming and it's going to be compressed to low bitrate h.264 anyway.

There will be a noticeable delay. Not recommended unless you only play puzzle or adventure games.
I use this exact product to capture Switch/PS4 gameplay. There is NO noticeable delay at all.

Someone mentioned a lot of camera manufactures have released from software to do this without the adapter. Here is a link to an article about the Sony solution. It mentions several other major brands as well and has links.

I am new to this and just found the link so I have no experience with how well it works.

I use this with my RX1R II and have significantly benefitted from going to a camlink.

I just want to play PS4, Switch, etc., on my PC that is connected to a projector.1080p.
No streaming or recording, but also no lag. Cheapo ones work? Or one of the elegatos?

Does this do on the fly encoding? Or is it just a pass through?

Pass through. You need a capture software like obs or elgato app to record.

If you don't care about quality than buy a cheap webcam. Setting up a mirrorless/dslr camera for streaming require some investment. If you don't have the money than it better to get a $50 webcam.

In order to set up a mirrorless/dslr camera you also need:

1. Hdmi cable.
2. Tripod. A very stable tripod.
3. Room to put your tripod and camera behind or to the side of your monitor.
4. Dummy battery to provide continuous power and better heat management. I highly suggest not using the build in direct power to the power outlet if your camera support it. Using it heat up your camera a lot. It might cause your camera to overheat if you are streaming for a long period of time.
5. Third party Mic. Camera mic are not the best.
6. A capture card like elgato 4k camlink.

Official Elgato rep confirms 50-100ms lag [reddit.com]. People who have reviewed it confirm there is lag as well.

Maybe you can't notice 50-100ms lag but I definitely can in shooters and platformers.
