Even with the Amazon Visa 5%, the frequency of "pay with points" deals on Amazon is plentiful. You can use as little as one point to get $10,$20 or even $30 off certain purchases. This alone, justifies having this no fee card.
The 5% categories are excellent when they are for gas stations, ( IIRC, the best gas card only offers 4%), wholesale clubs, and streaming services. And even though I have the Amazon card, I will use the Discover card when the 5% category is Amazon, just to boost my points.
If you have the Amex Blue Cash Preferred, use it on all grocery stores (6%), streaming services (6%) prepaid toll replenishment (3%) and gas stations (3%), rotating in the 5% cards when they are for gas stations.
Same for Chase Freedom. This seems like a lot of work but it's really just building a habit that becomes second nature over time.
To make things easier, I use a label maker, and at the beginning of each year I put small labels on each 5% card, detailing the categories for each quarter. With the labels on cards you can't really go wrong.

Discover and chase freedom usually offset similar categories so having both really helps. My BoA card is setup for 3% online so anything that's not Amazon goes through that one.
I need to start keeping track of which has rental, price protection, and extended warranty since that seems to be on its way out.

at this point, i'm 85% online and 15% pos when it comes to swipes or 97% online and 3% pos when it comes to $$$. the few times i'm in the latter category don't make a dent in the calculations and it wouldn't matter if i paid cash.
Also with the sams app, you can make the discover the default for scan and go and you don't have to remember anything else or even bring the card.

Yes that should work.

Oops. Something went wrong.
We apologize for any inconvenience, but the rewards calendar is not working at this time. Please check again later.

I've tried a bunch of times, even attempted to message but only got a bot, and I am unable to get to the calendar. Tried two different browsers as well.
Yes! Same here.
In my example, our Disney trip is going to cost around $5500 - now I could pay that outright, or take the extra step of buying GC's and getting 5% back on $4500 of that (3 cards) and save $225. I'm paying the whole amount anyway, why not save *something*. People that frequent Disney routinely do this with Target RedCard to get 5% on Disney GC @ Target, FWIW.
I also recall a time, way back when Discover started this promo, and the limits were higher, where I needed to have some major dental work done. The Discover promo ended in March and the dental work was the following month, so I called them to prepay the entire thing (like $3k IIRC) just to get the 5% back via Discover. Why not?
(and the above would change if I anticipated carrying a balance, which I never do, so using a CC isn't going to cost me more than trying to pay cash)
The only caveat to that is one loses on Costco card benefits and also Costco cashback on it's card.
