This product was recommended by wire cutter as their upgraded pick for both 2020 and 2021. I would assume lots of people own these as that is a very popular review site and if you do some research you'll probably find someone on a blog somewhere, who is very tech savvy and has analyzed what type of data is used by the app and the robovac, to the extent available.
Just to note, Eufy, another very popular robovac brand, is owned by Anker, which is also a Chinese company. They produce security cameras and headphones and tons of other products that I'm sure millions of people globally have in their homes.
There was even talk at one point about Wyze sending data back to China and they are not even a Chinese company. I believe they were founded in Seattle by some former Amazon employees.
The point I'm trying to make is that people can allege whatever they want on the internet but you should do your own research before making an informed decision.
Edit: you can create a guest network on your home router, if you have that function, and keep the Robovac separate from your main WiFi network. This seems to be a reasonable solution for anyone that is concerned.
This means source code is closed to regulators and could contain any number of features harmful to your security and privacy.
1. Governments around the world are blocking CCP designed products and apps for security reasons.
2.. Allowing a CCP designed wifi product onto your private network with a full sensor array could give nefarious actors full access to the devices on your network, access to everything said in your house, and create vulnerabilities that other bad actors could exploit.
3. Even if you do not value your privacy chances are you're only a few degrees of separation from someone who does. When you are vulnerable you become a risk to everyone you know. Any private information you discuss about them now is at risk. Any time they step into your home or log into your private network they are now also a victim.
This is a lot of risk to take on just to save a few bucks on a product whose technology was likely stolen from a US company.
The individual choices each of us makes affects our overall prosperity as a country.
The great news is we still have a choice and should make the right one any time we're able.
They should very close now bar actual hardware differences with recent updates to the S4.
This is the S4 MAX which is 95% your S6 PURE without a water tank/pad. They are the same design layout but the S4 MAX seems "tuned" for higher airflow.
Wrong. S5 has the same Allwinner R16 A7 SoC, but was launched with older software/algorithms. S5 and S6 are extremely close in terms of layout and design with SW being the main difference. (Should be identical with recent updates to S5). There are more overall sensors on the S6.
S6 has various upgrades to the 2nd Gen S5 design such as water tank indicator for no mop zones and sound suppression on the rear port (contributes to slightly less airflow, but noticeably more quiet).
S4 MAX, S6 PURE, and S5 MAX are closer related (Identical layout design) bar hardware tuning and adjustments through the lot. These are all based on lower end/lower cost designs when comparing the Chinese lineup. S5 MAX launched with no tower bump, but newer versions have it.
Regardless of airflow, I find that the S6 is a superior machine over the S6 PURE and S4 MAX in my personal test. Even has a faster charger that all the "high end" Chinese roborocks have.
I haven't tried the S5 MAX, but it seems better (collectively) in regards to overall vacuum performance regardless of being based off this weaker platform. It's more of a custom model relative to the others. Also isn't sold in china where the S6 pure and S4 MAX are more or less the P5 with subtle changes.
The MiHome app and vacuum actually pings Oregon AWS (Amazon) for both scheduling and Xiaomi connectivity. Roborock app is Oregon AWS + TUYA.us for scheduling. You can argue Amazon supports the CCP and I wont disagree.
But yes, data is likely accessed from china.. just not sent to china directly. I've self monitored this.
