thx op. how'd you find out about this? never got an email from chase.
Costco gas stations aren't coded as "wholesale clubs" so you won't get 5% for that but this offer will get you the discount.
Money is money. Also the true value of these Freedom cards is transferring the "cash back" to Ultimate Rewards points and redeeming them on your Sapphire Preferred (+25% redemption bonus) or Sapphire Reserved (+50% redemption bonus).
Edit: Since I was originally on mobile...
The TRUE value in Chase Ultimate Rewards is in their 1:1 transfer rates to their ~13 or so travel partners. The Chase Travel Portal is pretty good if you have the Sapphire Reserve and you get 1.5 cents per point. By transferring you can get 3 cents or more. Sometimes even more during promos or specials. Although if you can get around 2 cents per point you are doing just fine with Chase.

The even better value is transferring them to either of the Sapphire cards and then transferring to hotels/airlines and using their points system to book.
By doing this, I was able to book two business-class round trip flights to Europe in 2019. Ended up costing me like 250,000 points, but the dollar value of those was over $10,000.
Yeah, that too. Chase and Amex have great transfer partners. I tried to keep my original response short since I was on mobile.
I activated the offer on my AARP Chase card using the link providee by OP and I received the offer for 5% cashback on up to $1,500 combined purchases on Grocery, Drugstore, and Gas Station between Jan 1 to March 30, 2021. Had to do a double take, thought this was on my Freedom card.

I'm fairly familiar with the Ultimate Rewards points ecosystem. I have 3 Chase cards including a Sapphire Reserve (which I love for the 50% redemption bonus). But I'm unfamiliar with any Sapphire-specific advantages for point transfer to other hotel/airline point systems. Can you provide more info on this?
The best I've really seen along these lines is with transfer to Hyatt's system due to the fact that they put their hotels in to tiers for point redemption rather than doing a straight point-to-dollar conversion, but I haven't really seen any advantages on airfare, and I definitely haven't seen transfers that seem to particularly advantage Sapphire cardholders. But it sounds like I'm missing something.
I came up with the brilliant idea of buying gift cards (Amazon, Hulu, HBO etc) at a 7-Eleven gas station and when I walked up to the counter the guy said cash only for gift cards. Still looking for a way to take advantage of the gas station category bonus.
Lotto tickets, anything inside, and I've never hear of cash only for GC's at gas stations.... Try a different place?

Same thing in theory for airfare, you just need to spend some time searching the awards calendars and have flexible dates. I've had lots of success transferring to Flying Blue (Air France/KLM).
Would love to know how people are hearing about these. It's hard enough finding out about things like CSR's Peloton bonus, which isn't widely advertised even on the CSR page.
Fyi... Love chase credit cards(never carry a balance here)
But their investment You Invest thing is garbage... I was told yesterday that i couldn't liquidate my SPEM due to Presidential order haha... After 1 hr... They called me to tell me that I was lucky the presidential order has just been lifted... Back to vanguard... Don't know why i left.

But yes you are 100% correct.
I used to buy $1000 of Costco cash cards with my discover card when they ran quarterly bonuses.
