It's heated, we have a lot of snow and mine stays clear.
It IS NOT heated. This has been debunked already on /r/starlink.

So, it looks like the dish points (mostly) straight up. Anybody on beta know what happens when it fills up with snow? Will I need to climb onto the roof and clean it to restore service like with my sat tv dish?
There's an active heating element. You do not have to do anything when it comes to snow.

you are incorrect. There are active heating elements in the dish. Go look at reddit again, you can see that the snow slowly melts off the flat face of the dish.

No, it doesn't. Stop spreading misinformation. You believe because you saw a picture of snow melting off the dish that it has heating elements? That's not even remotely 'proof'

I own it, it's warm to the touch right now and its 15 degrees at my house. I can see it uses up to about 100w when it gets cold. There is snow all around it and none on the dish. Not sure why people think it's not. I am literally looking at steam coming off it.

Anyone with experience here...if Starlink is asking me for the full amount, does that mean my area is eligible to receive a unit right away? Thanks

Thanks for the informative posts!

I currently work remotely for my day job and occasionally struggle with 5-8mbps.

I also sell on eBay on the side, with sales north of 100k, so obviously I file taxes on that income. Any reason I wouldn't be able to deduct the full cost here?

I am enthusiastic about Starlink but was really disappointed to only be able to preorder dispite being at 1 degree in latitude below the current beta test range. Now I see people have ordered a full kit south of my locale. Using a hotspot for connectivity on a tower with microwave backhaul is no fun.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. I'm 1/4 a mile from the nearest line for high speed internet. They won't run it to my house. I asked them if they would if I paid. You know how much they wanted? $10,000. TEN THOUSAND farkING DOLLARS.

You don't know what you're talking about, and it's very obvious.
I'm less than that from the fiber that feeds the elementary and middle schools near me.
The schools are just over two miles away, as the crow flies, next to each other and surrounded by hundreds of acres of fields.
I'm closer to town than the schools and the N-S road between us has the fiber.
There is no price the provider will quote me, but I'm sure it would be something absurd like that if they even could.
REMC is talking about a fiber rollout over the next ten years, but my road is not getting it for a few years.
Funny that the REMC fiber eventually available to me will be buried right next to the fiber already going to the school.

Because people have taken it apart completely and found no heating elements inside.

It uses over 100watts of power doing what it does. This naturally makes a fair amount of heat as you have noticed, but that's not from any sort of heating element.

Another way to think about this. Plug a laptop in and use it for a few hours, even in very cold temps it will feel warm on the lower half. But it doesn't have any heating elements in it.

I'll 2nd this as I have starlink also. It's powered by POE and puts off some heat and the snow melts off of it. Haven't had any issues with to much snow. The face is also flat not concave like a traditional dish so it can't fill up with anything.

only about 6% or 19M of the US doesn't have access to broadband according to the fcc

https://www.fcc.gov/reports-resea...%20service.

Why the FCC data is worthless garbage has been discussed pretty extensively earlier in the thread.

The real # of people without broadband in the US is over 160 million based on real-world data not the FCC zip code junk (multiple sources supporting that figure also provided earlier in this thread with data from Microsoft, PEW research, etc)

I can see the current draw go up significantly the colder it gets. My UnRaid server reports the load on my UPS. At 70F it was something like 50w, at 15F its around 125W. I am not an expert on phase array setups but have watched the current draw track with temp for 2-3 months now. Something makes it go up when it gets colder, I am not sure why a heater is out of the question, even if its using the antenna grid somehow to do it its still heating as needed in a manner tied to the outside temp. Looking at the tear down video the antenna portion looks has a grid of traces across the whole assembly that could be for heating, or maybe they just crank the antenna power when its cold. Kinda semantics at this point, it heats more when cold somehow.

They released an update in Dec about it - SpaceX announced it "Deployed basic Snow Melt Mode" to the Dishy McFlatFace Starlink antenna "during which Starlink produces additional heat to mitigate signal attenuation caused by snow build-up on the face of the user terminal."

heating element or not, who cares as long as the snow melts and the dish works. I live in MN and I've seen lots of posts that report that it works fine in the snow.

I'm more worried about obstructions than snow. I live out in the country, but finding a spot fairly close to the house without a bunch of trees is gonna be an issue.
