For those who care about such things, this is basically a refreshed/upgraded AC68. Instead of a dual-core 800MHz (68U) or 1GHz (68P) CPU and 128MB of flash, it's 1.4GHz/256MB. https://www.snbforums.com/threads...00p.35759/

This. I'm running multiple AC68U units (with Merlin firmware) and they're great for what they are, but at this price I would never buy this even with the refreshed specs. Better off looking at sales on a TPLink AX1500 at this range.
I'm still using these but yeah, at this price point, its a bit high but then again AX routers are over 200.. I have several on AiMesh and few Tmobile ones to reflash over... good value at lower price point.

OK what about from the perspective of someone who would trade a reasonable amount of cash for convenience ($20-$30)?
That is:
-already has a fleet of ASUS AI Mesh routers and is familiar with interface
-don't want to hassle with flashing the TMO version (I thought it got locked down?)
-appreciate the AI Protect feature
That's me, and I don't think there's a more compelling unit at this price point, is there?
I'd like an AX model with 6E/6GHz and don't want to pony up more than a couple of hundred so looks like I have to wait a year or so.

No idea.. tmo reflash on ebay are fairly cheap... but some are 'used' or not 100% new. I haven't jump on 6 yet because of price.. but maybe when 6E is main stream, I'm love my asus aimesh.. only because i got 1 router free from work like 5-6 years ago, and I bought a second used one off ebay for 40. I wanted to try it before I convert my tmobile ones.
I never use the aiprotect feature.. i should look into it..

If you already have some AIMesh, this is a decent deal. I have two of the 68's (one Tmo flashed), and they're fine for what I do...with Merlin, there's nothing more i want from a router. I only buy Asus routers, as their support is second to none.
Way over priced. I have 4 AC68U and none in use right now. The CPU is old and weak, unable to handle large number od IoTs and security cameras that are 24/7 transfer data. $50 is more like the fair price for this one.

The CPU in your 68U is only 800MHz. This is 1.4GHz, almost twice as fast.
I bought one of these like 6 years ago for $50... How is $90 now a Slickdeal? Especially when there are new better technologies available for the same price? Not that it's a bad product (like most SD referral posts) but thumbs WAY down for these garbage shill posts.
This is a great router (I've had the AC68R for around 5 years now), and it was one of the best for its time, but even I have to say it's getting a little long in the tooth. That said, the 1.4GHz cpu speed upgrade and 256MB of flash can probably stretch out its life for a few more years until WiFi-6 starts taking over. Overall though, I wouldn't jump in this unless it was $60 or less, or unless my router died and I need an exact replacement ASAP.

I would agree this is kinda pricey if you are not invested in the Asus platform, but the CPU is far from incapable. Attached is a pic of my main mesh hub router, with 17 clients attached and active. The CPU doesn't break a sweat, and my router is an AC68U, which is weaker than this one.

17 clients is nothing and my AC68Us were able to handle with a dozen or so clients. It is when you have more than 30 clients, It starts taxing. When you have more than 50 clients, problems are poping right and right. Even the XT 8 has problem let alone AC68U. Asus is not very good in making efficient router firmware. I end up having two networks one with AX92U pair for IoTs and security cameras and use EdgeX wired router for main network routing function and XT 8 pair as AP mesh. On surface, EdgeX's CPU is not that great either, but It is very efficient and stable to handle the load.
