Just so people are aware. There was/is a scam going on where some apple cards were redeemed the moment they were activated in store and the buyer was SOL. I myself am still fighting to get 300$ worth of gift cards and getting bounced around between target, apple and Chase. Buyer beware

Warning: if you are going to buy (any) gift card instore, please take only a pristine looking card. Do not get any card that is less than perfect looking. If you do, it might have been compromised. Better yet, just buy it online.

Source: my own experience with target with the last promo during thanksgiving. Bought few apple gift cards in store. I didnt pay attention to the sticker part of the card. Several of the cards i bought had some small scrapes or imperfections in the sticker part. Thought they were just dirty due to being out in the open. That should have been a clue that they were already compromised. True enough, about 6 minutes after I activated the card on the Target self check out kiosk, they were drained. Mind you, i have not opened the card yet they were drained of its accounts.

Tried to get a refund because of this. Called Apple: they said, yep, were activated and drained by a fraud apple ID. Call target instead to get refund. I called target: they said call Apple instead because we already activated the card correctly. I think there were at least 3 more people from the previous deal thread who had the same experience.

I did mine one right after the other, no issues

I don't think that's ever coming back to be honest. Since Apple Gift Cards as basically cash at the Apple Store unlike the iTunes cards.
They just did it 3 months ago.

The comment below should be taken seriously. There was a major scam. Apparently, getting digital gift cards by email was the safer route.

It appeared neither Apple nor Target wanted to take responsibility.
In the same boat, I'm out of even more money. Don't buy in store

why it is only "New Users" with userid that has a name plus 3 or 4 digits are the only ones taking about a major scam? Not just one or two, but half a dozen or more. What gives?

Are you questioning our intentions? Go read the Thanksgiving thread. I don't think that was just "new users", but feel free to spend hundreds of dollars and risk losing it. Only 3 of 11 of the cards I purchased in store worked. My loss. And I have been on slickdeals awhile, I just choose not to post unless it is actually something helpful. But maybe you just enjoy trolling those trying to warn others.

How did the scammers get the codes? They are hidden inside the sleeve, which has to be ripped which is not done in the checkout process.

I know because last week I bought my Apple gift cards from a grocery store (to get 6% Amex blu cash pref rewards). After checkout, still in the store, I immediately used the codes to purchase a MacBook from my phone to ensure the cards worked, and the staff could assist if anything was amiss. Guess this was a good idea.

Anyway the only way I can think of is if the scammers worked for the store selling the gift cards and they had some lighting technique to shine through the envelope.

Also, couldnt the scammers be tracked by the codes and the purchase shipping addresses? Unless they rented PO Boxes or some shit.

I got a target gift card for my mailman.
Hope he didn't have a problem. They were not well protected. No ripping required.
