This is considered to be one of the best Arcteryx jackets for those who are fans of the dead birds.
It's comfortable in 40degree weather with activity. Toasty at 50. Known to shed heat well. It is the replacement to the venerated Atom LT because of this function: the duality of warmth but shedding warmth with activity. Much better per reviews in outdoor gear labs and etc
At time of deal posting 10 mediums in stock in black
>Now Proteus XL, XXL, Black L
Hope this helps someone. I would jump on this if I hadn't already purchased a month ago

The reviews both professional and individual for those owning both proton and atom, all speak to how their new go to is not the atom but the proton, although to be fair, they are built for different purposes.
Atom is for idle heat. People complain it warms too much with activity.
Proton is for staying warm yet dumping heat once you're active. That duality is just amazing engineering.
Proton LT is thicker than FL, hence I gave my temperature ratings. FL is plenty warm for me here in 40s to 50s in so cal. Can't imagine wanting a jacket that's any warmer like the Atom for me.

Unless you're mountaineering or rock climbing then you're just walking like everyone else.
I guess the big difference is that hikers don't have the luxury of bailing if their jacket fails them and they have to rely on it for long periods of time, but at the end of the day we are purchasing the jackets for the same reasons, its lightweight, its warm, its comfortable, and it has a great warranty.
Those benefits don't diminish if you're walking on a sidewalk vs dirt path.
If I'm on a 200-mile loop and rain is on the forecast, I need a jacket I can trust will keep the water out while I hike.
If I'm at 10k ele. and it's going to be 15 degrees and windy that night, I need a jacket I trust to keep me warm
...
When your rely on your gear for survival, it's no longer just a dirt trail.
I run really hot. My coworkers always cold in the office and I feel fine. I wear Duluth armachillo boxers and only the athletic breathable type shirts. Hope the context helps !
Or would that not be enough?

I have a Gamma MX from about 10 years ago that had the zipper finally go on it (seems the weak point for these jackets). Just bought a new MX after seeing this post. I like it for all around use in the spring and fall in NY but I'm no mountaineer. I like that it's insulated but fairly light. Some of the other light ones without insulation are too wind-breaker-y for me usually. For winter I have a Fission SV from 2010 that also needed it's zipper repaired but is in brand new shape otherwise.

You are talking in store outlet right? Looks like I need a trip to one in early march
However, the way they make it so thin is that the outer shell is literally the thinnest material possible. On the 3rd time wearing it, I literally brushed against the branch of a tree (it barely touched the jacket) and the whole front of the jacket ripped open. I couldn't believe it and thankfully the company allowed me to send the jacket back and get a refund. However, I would never buy such a jacket again.

What materials is this thing made out of? What makes it so "breathable"? Aside from the branding I can't seem to find any clear-cut explanation of what makes it so great beyond the jumble of marketing terms they have listed.
