This is considered to be one of the best Arcteryx jackets for those who are fans of the dead birds.

It's comfortable in 40degree weather with activity. Toasty at 50. Known to shed heat well. It is the replacement to the venerated Atom LT because of this function: the duality of warmth but shedding warmth with activity. Much better per reviews in outdoor gear labs and etc

At time of deal posting 10 mediums in stock in black >Now Proteus XL, XXL, Black L

Hope this helps someone. I would jump on this if I hadn't already purchased a month ago

Check the reviews and can decide for yourself. People who wear Arcteryx I think want the best.

The reviews both professional and individual for those owning both proton and atom, all speak to how their new go to is not the atom but the proton, although to be fair, they are built for different purposes.

Atom is for idle heat. People complain it warms too much with activity.

Proton is for staying warm yet dumping heat once you're active. That duality is just amazing engineering.

Proton LT is thicker than FL, hence I gave my temperature ratings. FL is plenty warm for me here in 40s to 50s in so cal. Can't imagine wanting a jacket that's any warmer like the Atom for me.
Entire country buys SUVs to haul groceries not for off-roading
I spent too much money on dead bird already. But tempted.

Quote from configsys :
The un-insulated Alpha and Beta shell jackets are sized larger since they are typically worn with a mid-layer jacket like the Atom underneath. The Fission, Gamma and Venta are all lightly insulated jackets meant to be worn by themselves with perhaps a base-layer on and not with an Atom or Proton jacket as a mid-layer (as they won't fit if not sized up). Now if you were to wear an Alpha SV with a t-shirt underneath, then buy a size smaller. Arcteryx is mainly an activity wear clothing and it's all about layering properly not this 1-jacket keep-you-warm while you're standing still waiting for the bus in -20 degrees🤐
So this jacket would be used in conjunction with another rain jacket for wet weather or not at all?

It's slim fit. I wear the slim fit in Nike, Charles tyrwhitt dress shirts and all my other clothes in medium. Fits and looks good. The model in pic wearing medium is 6'+ But I'm 5'9" and about 170lb and the proton in medium looks good on me (imo. 😂)

what about the parka sizing like camosun, therme?

I have a therme and tried on the magnus and they were both larger than expected. I actually sized down on the therme.

Not trying to body shame, I just don't understand how these jackets fit anyone if the small fits a 38 chest, do you float in your jackets?

a 29 waist and a 34 chest in a medium should feel like wearing a robe.
Body shame away. I just told you it fits me. If you're not built like a climber shop a different brand.

Just received this yesterday, I would definitely size up. I'm about 6'3 180 with a longer torso, typically I order L Tall if available, or XL otherwise and expecting some bagginess. I ordered the XL and it's a bit tight on me and the length in the front is shorter than i expected

hardly...

suv --> designed to do a lot of things. Not any one thing exceptional. If in 2 years I need something to carry a kayak, take on some moderate dirt trails, or pack a bunch of gear in, I'll just get a general purpose suv

technical apparel --> made to be exceptional for a single use case. An L6 parka is tailor-made for alpine ascents and wouldnt do well in almost any other environment.

I can have 15 jackets for different situations but I just want a single car for most situations.
Ridiculous. That L6 parka can be used for hundreds of different things, including going to the grocery store. Don't be so pretentious.

Don't give up on this deal. Stock mysteriously appears albeit rarely, but it did. I was fortunate enough to just get the grey one in an XL size. Don't stop, believing.

Just wearing it or hanging it on a hanger gets most it out for me and looks good. It looks really wrinkled in the package but the material straightens up. ILeaving it folded in half or over a chair will stay wrinkled.

Not as wrinkle free as my old venta but still my go to these days
