They were renters too. They chose this safety stuff over a down-payment. So they paid a lot more in rent than I paid on my mortgage. Then 5 years later, I sell my house for another $100k, because houses appreciate. Now they're old and sick and trying to retire and turning to charity and government benefits to deal with the bills.
Which tell yourself it's "just money". Financial security is a thing too.
Maybe if they had kept quiet about what that rental house contained, it wouldn't have been more attractive to burglars. If you knew what they owned, that was already one too many people knowing. Unfortunately, seems many like to brag.
Did you get to keep it afterwards? We got no such thing in the Navy, of course. Special forces most likely did.
Sounds like they need Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. Sadly, so many people live just for today.
