Players start with bases at one edge of the board and fly spaceships to build settlements on other planets.
Resources at planets are hidden until you get there.
Alien civilizations can give power ups and victory points if you send scoutships to their worlds.
With resources (in addition to ships and bases) you can build upgrades to your ships- blasters, boosters and cargo rings.
It's fun. There are random events regarding pirates and merchants and the like. One card can be very unbalanced. Spaceflight is slow but one event grants a wormhole.
The original set is expensive and fragile.
Starfarers has always been much more expensive than regular catan. It's a different game with much more detailed pieces and things. It shouldn't be compared to basic Catan. MSRP of starfarers is 100 bucks

My favorite Catan game! Didn't even know they had a second edition, always had to wait until I was at BiL's to play since I didn't want to drop $300 on it myself. Thanks!
One of my family's favorite games, kids and adults alike. We had the original with the clever but fragile game pieces where you add components to your Mother Ship... But very carefully and don't drop them or they'll break!
New edition is better in a few ways, parts aren't fragile and the board is a little more like regular Catan, the planets themselves are tile groups put on place now, so the board isn't the same every game play.
Bought this full price when it came out because it's a family favorite
This seems insanely overpriced (with the pandemic it seems like most boardgames are at the moment). As an example regular Catan retails for around $50 but you can get it on sale for $25 or even as low as $15 on a really good sale. Not trying to be negative just wanted to provide a bit of perspective
