Some games require quick movement of the mouse. Based on this and the surface below the mousepad, the pad can shift, requiring you to move it back into place, potentially while playing a game where distraction can get you "killed". Having a larger pad that's also under the keyboard can stop shifting.

You also don't have to worry about going over the edge of the pad with these quick movements when its bigger.

It can help prevent scratches on the desk surface from the keyboard.

It can be a matter of style and a way to customize your gaming rig.

These are nice mouse pads and worth it on sale. Best part is it is one of the few Corsair products that doesn't require you to install their awful iCue software.

is it worth spending extra on the spill-proof version?

Doubt it. It's probably just a Scotch Guard type coating that will rub off after running your mouse over it enough.

With that said, don't put Scotch Guard on these. You'll ruin them.

How does one wash a mouse pad like this? I imagine a fraying mess of a mouse pad after you wash it.
I have two of the same style, so I just wash one and swap in a clean one.

I douse them with Dawn dish soap, run the shower over them, and then leave it hanging to dry.

Other than the dimensions and most playmats not having a stitched edge, they're the same material.

I don't see any decent ones for under $14 on Amazon though.

If you don't care about the design or the brand, just search "xxxl mousepad" and you'll find plenty of cheap competitors.

This one is identical, but without the design and $2 cheaper: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B082TLVLDC/

This slightly smaller one is currently $8 with coupon: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B014CP231W/
Hi. Why are you providing everyone Amazon affiliates link, may I know? 🙂

Good idea for this design. I have an all black one of these and it looks like this just after normal use. And I don't even eat at my desk

Good to know the pad is worth it. About iCue... Have you ever met Logitech G Hub? It makes iCue seem like J.A.R.V.I.S.

Bought mine back in 2015. No fraying no stains, daily use for work and competitive gaming. Great product and a steal at this price. Tracking is a bit behind a hard surface esport matt, but overall, gets the job done and will outlast any other matt out there. It even survived 3 moves in different states placed rolled inside boxes with other computer stuff!

Can someone explain to me why anyone would want their keyboard to be on the mouse pad? I don't get it.
I'll add that it helps reduce some of the overall "shock" when using a mechanical keyboard; It definitely feels like less impact (and I use o-rings, in addition), and it makes the sounds consistent by distributing the force. Of course, YMMV, as I'm coming this to a typical wooden desk surface. I suspect the dampening effect would be even greater on glass, metal, or something more solid.

Also, it's convenient for moving your entire mouse/keyboard setup out the way at once (I use monitor arms, so I can move everything out of the way if I want to use more desk space).

They're certainly not a necessary, but I have three of these keyboard/mouse mats and have really happy with them for years.

Great rat mat, as others have said the design could use an update/alternatives. Kinda always looks dirty, though on the plus side it also hides dirt to some extent. I thought the keyboard placemat design was weird until I tried one the very first time it went on sale, bought a second for work, use it 40 hrs a week for a couple years and no real signs of degrading.
