I had originally included a link to a review (old, but still...) where the Woodtek got a better rating than both Amana and CMT (well known and respected brands).

Bosch 1617 combo is the one to get and if you find it under 200 thats a good deal
I have this router. I often wish I just had a trim router instead. This router has more power than I need for most things, and I often use it on small pieces.

Keep in mind there are two version of Woodtek bits, and the ones that received the good rating here are the more expensive version. The individually sold bits are higher quality, but the bit sets beginning with #122 are their economy line.

Thank you for this! I originally thought this was a steal.
The single bit used in the tool test is $30 itself.
It's highly unlikely these will perform the same.

For a newbie... 1/2" vs. 1/4" shank? Or is it a good idea to have a set of both?
Depends on your router and your use. Most standard routers will support 1/2" or 1/4", and in that situation, you typically want to use 1/2" bits whenever possible. They're more stable and they'll give you a better result. That said, 1/4" bits will work just fine for most use cases, and if you have a smaller (palm/trim) router, then you'll want to go with 1/4" bits since it probably only supports that.

I have two routers, a bigger Bosch that I mostly use 1/2" bits on, and a Dewalt cordless compact router that only supports 1/4" bits. For lighter-duty actions, the smaller router and 1/4" bits work great. For example, I usually have my 1/8" roundover bit in the cordless router, since that makes such easy, convenient work of softening edges on almost any project.

For most heavier-duty work, particularly work that involves removing more material, I typically stick with 1/2" bits and my corded router.

I have it, too. And, if I only had one router, the Bosch 1617 would probably be my choice. It's a great combination of size and power for general work. I do agree on the usefulness of a compact/trim router, though. I picked up a Dewalt cordless compact and that thing is absolutely awesome for a ton of common tasks. Way more convenient than the Bosch for what it does.

It's worth remembering, though: there's almost nothing that can't be done with the Bosch, while there are quite a few things that I'd never try with the compact.

What's the quality like on these?

Router bits probably isn't the best thing to skimp on. Routers are scary. Routers don't F around.

Similar question for the harbor freight bits. Quality check?

I don't specifically know for these bits but I used to machine metal with large machines and found that the cheap Chinese bits worked very well. In fact a lot of the more expensive bits were just repackaged cheap ones. For wood application where the tolerances don't matter much, I would personally just try my luck with a 20 dollars set from amazon. Take with a grain of salt since I have no experience with these particular router bits but in all likelihood most users would not notice any difference.

Edit: a 24 bits set goes for under 30 dollars on amazon, and all these cheap sets seem to have the same very ratings from users

Is Woodtek considered a premium bit brand like Whiteside?
Whiteside are professional grade and made in the US. If tools help you earn you your living the differences may matter, otherwise less so.

I am fascinated by the possibilities with routers but it looks like you need a PhD or that kind of devotion / time to make full use of what they can do.
Looked at one item you said you needed, bought and I noticed "Imported."
Oops, I will rather take the China stuff than the one, say, from India Smilie
Disclaimer: I am no Chinese (No, I am not saying the way Nixon declared about himself in 1962 if anyone remembers that and get offended) and admire the way they are moving up / moved up in high tech & manufacturing. I am an Electrical and Computer Engg. prof. and all my lab / fun stuff now comes directly from China. No more of our Radio Shacks and what not Wave
And don't get into the talk about stealing etc. In research and development, you take someone else's idea and build on it or re-engineering or reverse engineering and it becomes murkier to define when it is really bad. We have stolen (though we can say by the individuals desertion) of great brains from developing countries and benefitting from that.
TBF, there's crazy theft as in "grab it from the counter and run out the door" and then there's more sophisticated (and arguably more insidious) theft - which is historically what we in the US do. We steal the guy with the brain, lol, and we have for a very long time. IP rights run into conflict with individual rights... same old story.

Anyway, I agree with you about Chinese manufacturing, and in truth it's the only option for a lot of stuff. I'll buy US where I can, though.

When I bought this router the guy checking me out at home depot said "nice choice, this is the router I have at home." When I showed it to my dad he said "nice choice, this is the router I have at home." And when I told my boss he said "nice choice, thats the router I have at home."

Good link - I don't see anywhere which line of Woodtek bits they're reviewing though.
