At $89.99 that would put it at around $18 per TB. Still not as good as sale priced larger capacity external 3.5 USB desktop drives. but better than the $20 to $21 or so of the typical sale priced WD portable; Easystore, My Passport and Element drives. Will be interesting to see what others say about this particular drive considering the number of folks around these parts who dislike (or hate) Seagate drives in general.

For anyone interested past slickdeal discussions on this Costco drive.

For 2019 and earlier one can use the search bar.

Edit to add: Past posts in earlier deal discussions, like this post, indicate the drive (at least in the past) was shuckable. Some, like this post, likewise claim this drive is SMR which may account for the horrible speeds some claim they have.

I bought this drive on sale for $65 about 2 years ago(it was the last item on shelf) I shucked it (it is thicker than usual 2.5" drive) and put it in my pc. No issues with it.

Is it sata connector? I've bought a drive like this before and the manufacturer had built it with a USB3.1 connector on the drive instead of sata with a usb bridge.

These can often be found on Amazon warehouse for about $75. Purchases 3 for warm/cold storage for my server and they've been good so far. These are smr so don't expect to write too often.

This Anandtech overview runs tests [anandtech.com] on the Backup Plus and WD My Passport trying to determine whether it is SMR. They think they both are, but it doesn't make all that much difference nowadays. However the speeds of the Backup Plus appear to fluctuate a lot more than the My Passport with consistent use.

If it's sold at Costco, you must be a member. I have a membership and will buy for you, if you really want it.

Yes. If you have a shop card, you can go into the Costco store and buy it with that. But, you have to be a Costco member to log into your account and make the purchase.

Thanks for pre-answering my question:
1) is it shuckable. I like better than 3.5" for power/heat/size
2) size: larger than standard 95mm, prob 12.5mm

I'll be buying 1. Thanks!
I bought one of these to shuck and put into my Tivo Bolt a couple of years ago but I would go 3.5" desktop drive 9 out of 9 times if given the choice between the two. They can be had cheaper and last much longer than laptop drives.

Not a bad price. $90 seems to be the pricepoint for these 5tb portable drives. The WD has been this price a few times over the last year. That being said, I'd hold out for the WD as the seagate drives are pretty universally known to be trash.
Quote from ssi :
ditto that. Blackblaze [backblaze.com] stats could back that statement as well. keep in mind that Blackblaze uses Seagate higher end drives, and they are still trash.
People keep on bringing up those Blackblaze reports for years and years now. But I've only had 2 Seagate drives go bad (a laptop drive and a 1.5TB desktop one) over the years and with Western Digital almost all of the ones that I bought went bad.

This one or the WD one at Best Buy for $99? Just gonna use it as a small media center connected to a Raspberry pi.
Out of 5 failed HD I had - 4 were Seagate. Good luck

Unfortunately, I have had multiple failures with Seagate external drives. I just don't have a lot of faith in this brand.

I'm currently using this on my Raspberry Pi 4 running OpenmediaVault 5 for over a year running 24/7. Not exactly the fastest or the most redundant but it works and doesn't take up alot of electricity.
