Costco will be offering $35 off starting 3/10 on the Seagate 5TB, bringing it to the lowest it has been, similar to last year.
This will be available both in-store and online @ costco.com.

NOTE: Doesn't start until 3/10!

Don't forget to use your Chase Freedom card for 5X back!
This is a SMR drive

At $89.99 that would put it at around $18 per TB. Still not as good as sale priced larger capacity external 3.5 USB desktop drives. but better than the $20 to $21 or so of the typical sale priced WD portable; Easystore, My Passport and Element drives. Will be interesting to see what others say about this particular drive considering the number of folks around these parts who dislike (or hate) Seagate drives in general.

For anyone interested past slickdeal discussions on this Costco drive.

Edit to add: Past posts in earlier deal discussions, like this post, indicate the drive (at least in the past) was shuckable. Some, like this post, likewise claim this drive is SMR which may account for the horrible speeds some claim they have.
I bought this drive on sale for $65 about 2 years ago(it was the last item on shelf) I shucked it (it is thicker than usual 2.5" drive) and put it in my pc. No issues with it.

So I just went to the store and got this. Less then 1 hour after plugging it in and writing to it and it started making the click of death and stopped responding. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and now it wont detect the volume and makes the usb disconnect sound after a couple minutes.

Not uncommon for a seagate drive. Buyer beware.

I have good luck with seagate, (on linux, with apm is disable).
the worst case was barracuda 3TB when APM is enable and parking the head within very short period of idle

Yep. I went back to Costco and got another one. It's still working. Though it did reboot itself (computer made the usb disconnect and then reconnect sound) while it was under heavy load for several hours and ruined what it was working on. It felt a little hot to the touch when that happened. So I wouldn't recommend using it for intense workloads unless you have a fan blowing on it or something.

It is possible the drive pulled more power from the USB port than the USB port could handle so the drive reset/rebooted itself. Can happen if a drive is slightly out of spec from the USB standards. Basic troubleshooting step is to try the drive in another computer to see if the problem can be replicated. If one particular model of drive is constantly having a particular problem with one specific computer, it generally means a compatibility issue with that one computer rather than being a bad drive.

Had a problem with one Toshiba portable drive that was slightly out of spec with how much power it draws and would have issues on one specific model of Toshiba laptop's USB 3.0 port. Had to use a powered USB hub any time I connected that portable drive to those particular laptops.

It is not uncommon that many hard drives will give off excessive heat under long read/write operations. If one is concerned, use additional cooling on the drive and or cut additional air circulation holes/vents in the external drive enclosure.

Sloooooowwww.
It runs pretty fast for the first few GB (around 70MB/s) but then it slows down to under 1MB/s for several minutes.

Tried backing up a laptop which usually takes 2-3 hours. After 10+ hours I gave up because it was under half done and was a 0 MB/s
I'm guessing it's the SMR (Shingled magnetic recording)
Whatever it is this drive is super slow for large file transfers.
It's going back to costco.
