Every microfiber towel I have ever used is poor at absorbing water.
If you got no better option sure can keep using microfiber or waffle weave towels, but for real drying and water absorbing you need something made for that duty. There is a reason Chamois Towel, shammy towels, or synthetic towels exist, they are all the same thing just the name slightly different. Get one of those and see the real difference, I would not dry or detail my car with anything less. The towels I mentioned are meant for one main role to dry the product nothing else! If you follow proper care directions one will last you many many years. Go do your homework and thank me later, I would post the one I am using, but the Chinese brand I bought a few of long ago they stopped making. I can post some links for those who are interested in suggestions though from Amazon.
I've actually have great experience with this towel, it actually absorbs water instead of just moving it around.

We used these regularly when I detailed cars. These dry cars well and dry fairly quickly between cars if you have multiple to do. The really fluffy towels will end up catching dirt in the fibers which will end up scratching your paint. I ended up with a bunch of the Cobra waffle towels from autogeek that I am using regularly, but these are essentially the same things. Just need to remember to wash them with microfiber soap and no fabric softener.

Edit: Also use a squeegee made for auto paint or an air blower before you dry your car and your towel will be able to dry the whole car easily.

This towel is pretty bad for drying, I bought half a dozen of them and now only use them to clean the wheels.

If you want a towel that is actually amazing at drying, Griot's PFM is the way to go. Once I tried that I took all other towels I had for drying the paint and moved them to other functions, some actually just went to a plastic bin and never got used again. The PFM is like nothing else, so damn good.

I'd recommend the harbor freight giant plush towel. I can dry two cars back to back with that towel and it's &10.

I use a leaf blower. It's faster and doesn't strip the wax or leave water spots.

I used to use a waffle weave one that did a pretty good job with my car but not my SUV. I went to pepboys and picked up one of these: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Microt.../154565897 It looks like the new model is this one which looks different from mine: https://www.pepboys.com/platinum-...ct/2071367

Either way, 'extra plush' really is extra plush and holds a lot of water. I can do an entire SUV with one towel without having to ring it out constantly like the waffle weave.

Here's a pro-tip I learned from a detailers youtube channel: After you're done rinsing off your car, take off the hose end sprayer and run the water straight from the hose over your car. It pushes off most of the water and requires a lot less towel to dry it. Works wonders.

I'm a car enthusiast. I still use leather chamois for my cars. I have a show car quality R32 GTR and I'm meticulous about paint finishes and that's why I'm hesitant to move away from my tried and true. Anyone just as anal about their car's paint/clearcoat and can comment on long term usage of microfiber towels to dry a car?

Agreed, I use the synthetic chamois. And I pat dry with it, not dragging it across my car. Microfiber after.

Only use a MF like this if you want scratches and swirls on your vehicle.

You want a real pro tip, if your using a normal water hose buy a inline filter like you would use for an RV and attach it to the line. It will make the water a lot better and filter out all the minerals making drying a lot easier.

I mentioned this on the previous page, chamois, shammys, synthetically towels are the proper tool for the job, microfibers are a poor substitute I primarily use them for a quick wipe when it comes to paint. Outside of that I use them for glass, trim, wheels, and interior detailing.

Yep a good way to do it, but I usually skip the microfiber all together as my chamois picks it all up. Also helps I have my water filtered so no residue or heavy minerals coming out of my water house, as I mentioned above.

These are by far the best I've ever used at actually absorbing water (https://www.amazon.com/GYEON-Quar...B01CESR9MW). I found using a waffle towel or towel posted first and then going over with the Gyeon is a perfect combo for streak/lint/spot free finish.

The "fluffy" style drying towels simply leave too much lint - terrible on darker cars.

I own an independent microfiber company. We cater to the RV market-high end RVs and Luxury Coaches.
That being said...you want an 80/20 Polyester/Polyamide blend...more polyester can scratch.
Make sure your towel has sewn, versus glued, edges.
And absolutely DO NOT, for the sake of your vehicle, use Harbor Freight microfiber.
Also, DO NOT wash or dry your microfiber with ANY fabric softener. Fabric softener will clog the fibers and the towel will not absorb water.

Best car towels for any purpose come from 'The Rag Company.' A little pricier, but worth it.

These are OK for entryline, the higher end towels from RagCompany/Adams/Gyeon/Autofiber cost a bit more but perform far better. Synthetic towels/shammies may work for bulk general work, but they absorb dirt overtime and can't release that easily. If you had a super high end exotic or finicky paint finish microfibers are best longterm if you maintain them appropriately. That means not mixing with cotton, using Free/Clear Laundry Detergent or Microfiber detergent, no high heat for drying (air drying after air fluffing is good), no softeners/bleaches.

Towels are like toilet paper, once you try the good stuff you won't turn back to old technology/lower quality. If you don't care for swirls or scratches, use the synthetic items to get the car dry.
