Play the demo before you purchase. I'm a huge pokemon fan and got my son into it as well. Neither of us found anything enjoyable about this game.

Not really Pokemon games. They are rogue-like dungeon crawlers with a Pokemon coat of paint. They are enjoyable in their own unique way but only for people who like strategy games. Even then, these are some of the more child-friendly variations to that formula and only use the Pokemon property to draw a bigger audience. I would suggest picking up better and cheaper rouge-like dungeon crawlers like Crypt of the NecroDancer (often on sale for $4) and Cadence of Hyrule if you are interested in the genre.
