Aw, damn...it requires a CPU too?

I'm out then
They werent always free -- lol.

This is basically a Lightroom competitor for Nikon. For Free.

It combines the power of 2 previous software -- at least one of which was Paid. The other I think was free.

But it combines both and is a powerful tool for Nikon users. Although Adobe might have slightly more features being $100/yr.

What best image format for editing, besides RAW, png, jpeg, Tiff, something else?

Is the a good easy to follow tutorial for editing out a person from a photo?
I'm not an expert, but I've done enough to know that any RAW image is going to give you the most flexibility in terms of changing the photo. Once a photo is in jpg format (or similar), it's already been "edited" once, so you are degrading it by editing again (AND maybe more importantly, you won't have access to the "full data" since a lot of it has been cut from the raw>jpg process.

Example: if the whites and blacks in a jpg are off (too bright, too dark), you have very little chance of truly correcting those errors (those corrections would have in theory been done already from the RAW>JPG process by the camera).

With a RAW file, you have access to more dynamic range to work with, so your chances of being able to save even bad shots is better.

Note that it usually takes more "work" to edit a RAW file than a JPG (with LOTS of exceptions to that).

Personally, I just shoot both RAW and JPG at the same time, unless I need high speed for sports (then just JPG). Then in post I can make the decision on whether or not the JPG the camera produced is good enough, or I need to really dig in and start from the negative as it were.

Wonder how this compares to their old Capture NX-2 they basically abandoned 10 years ago.
Was good (but not free) until they stopped supporting it and it fell apart.

RAW stores all of the digital information the camera takes to make the picture and allows non-destructive editing by changing some of those values. For example, you can change the white balance of the picture, but the data collected by the camera is unchanged. TIFF stores an lossless processed picture with all of the data required to build each pixel but missing the raw data collected by the camera. Changing the white balance on a TIFF file would change the data about the individual pixels. PNG/JPG are highly compressed formats that lose some data to achieve smaller file sizes.

I'm not an expert, but I take pics and have a workflow for processing/storing/sharing them. I take photos in RAW format, process them as RAW files and sometimes as TIFFs to use image processing tools that can't handle RAW, and then export as JPG to share online.

One of the 66 engines in VirusTotal detects a trojan in the downloaded installation file. Probably a false positive, but still not sure if I want to click on this .exe file.

I already have photo editing software, but I'm in need of video editing software. I take video on my canon dslr and also sometimes take video on my android phone. Will this software work for editing video from those sources?

It only works with Nikon RAW, TIFF/JPEG. If you have a Sony you can use Sony RVE. I'm sure Canon has their own. Most manufacturers have free software, so I don't know why this is being called 'a deal', and with Nikon supposedly exiting the camera market is it a deal?
The articles I've read state that Nikon is going to stop making cameras in Japan, not stop altogether, and are moving their production to Thailand.

Try DaVinci Resolve, very powerful and free product with tons of tutorials on youtube.

Thanks for the very helpful information!

I totally understand that Raw is the best but also results in very large file size. I can that it would make sense to use Raw format when taking very specific types of photos, like nature, architect, etc.. But not for all photos taken at a birthday party or any occasion where you just keep clicking to capture moments.

TIFF is a little bigger than RAW in terms of space on disk. If you have Amazon Prime their free unlimited photo storage will let you back up your RAW files. Storage space isn't that expensive but you do you; you can delete the RAWs after you have finished processing the pics and exported them if you don't want to save them.
