mostly designed for Nikon camera's but will work with with RAW photo files in addition to .NEF and .NRW files. It also works with regular JPEG and TIFF files

This is basically a Lightroom competitor for Nikon. For Free.
It combines the power of 2 previous software -- at least one of which was Paid. The other I think was free.
But it combines both and is a powerful tool for Nikon users. Although Adobe might have slightly more features being $100/yr.

Look up Capture One Sony Express. It is free and based on the best RAW processing on the market.
There is also a free Nikon Express version as well.
If you're expecting Lightroom, this ain't it. It's not bad (especially for free!), but I sure wouldn't recommend it if you don't shoot Nikon DSLR raw. Just too many other options to choose from if you aren't in the Nikon ecosystem.
Also, no dbase management whatsoever, if anyone was expecting that (you shouldn't, that's not what this is).
The criticism of the slowness in the linked review is valid. Make an adjustment, and maybe a second later, you can see the result. That doesn't sound like a big deal unless you are editing a LOT of photos. But even the one offs, that speed is unacceptable these days, honestly. It's noticeably slower than most other editing apps I've tried.
I do love the tight integration with my Nikon camera and its files, though. It really opens up options (seems like ALL!) for Nikon RAW files that I have not seen in Adobe or other products. That's VERY cool.
Unfortunately, the disadvantages (or lack of certain features, mostly) of the package probably don't make up for that one big advantage for most people.
