But since I added a free line in December I cannot make changes for 12 months to not jeopardize the "old" free line from December, so I would have to keep these 2 added lines (one free one paid) until January. That monthly rate will eat into the discount since not needed/used.

2 lines of the "Essentials" is $45/month/line or $90 total plus tax. So unless I'm mistaken you need to add $180 to unlock the 2 phones.
