Anyone have experience in paying tuition to redeem bonus cashback? Thinking of paying daughters tuition with this card but not sure if it's considered a "fee"
This will work 100%.

Are most people getting the annual fee waiver when applying in branch?

No, sorry, I meant going from one to the other but keeping your initial Sapphire account to capitalize off the additional gains.
Yeah so in that case you just have to wait 13 months from opening the Preferred to product change to the Reserve. You'll keep your account number, UR points, etc. But you won't be eligible for any signup bonus on the Reserve.

For that, you would have to wait 48 months from the date they give you your Preferred welcome bonus points, downgrade your Preferred to a Freedom card and then apply for the Reserve and get approved.

Hope that helps!

Yes I just went in today and fee is waived automatically. He even called to have it expedited. Needed the card to book my mini trip to Pismo Beach next weekend.

Correct- Chases reading of the CARD act is they can't switch you to anything with a higher AF in the first year of the account being open.
weird that they won't allow the upgrade even if the customer requested it... oh well

Do you happen to know if there's any rule about any waiting period before you can apply for another Sapphire card (after downgrading/cancelling the first one of course).
Someone mentioned that we have to wait 2 years between applying for Sapphire card?
What I want to do is to apply for the Preferred now, and downgrade it to a Freedom once I get the sign on bonus, then apply for a Reserve again since I can't upgrade it. I know there's no sign up bonus when I apply for the Reserve, just wanted the benefits.
IF there IS a 2 year wait, maybe I'll just downgrade my existing Reserve and apply for a new Reserve to get the 60k bonus (instead of 80k for Preferred).

I wish I had known about the annual fee waving in-store before I applied online, they just opened a branch right near my house! I guess I'll try going there and begging. Maybe they'll make an exception for me.

If it were for the bonus it's be a 4 year wait, not 2 (48 months since last bonus- open/close date of firs card irrelevant)

You can certainly PRODUCT CHANGE to a sapphire card much sooner if you don't currently have one open (and the card you are changing FROM has been open at least 12 months already)....

But you can not open a NEW sapphire card - at all even if you don't care about the bonus- until 48 months after you received your last sapphire bonus.

Quote from Chase app terms :
The product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 48 months.

That's the terms for getting the card at all not just getting the bonus.

Now, if you already HAVE a non-sapphire chase card (say you already have a freedom or freedom unlimited) you could:

Downgrade your CSP to a no-fee card (a second freedom for example, or a freedom unlimited if you lack one)

Then product change one of the existing free cards up to a CSR (as long as you've had that free card 12 months or longer).

But otherwise your fastest route to a CSR at this point will be wait till you've had the CSP 12 months then upgrade to CSR.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Chase took a card that rivaled the Amex Platinum and destroyed it in a matter of 12 months. With cards such as the Flex Freedom and the Flex Unlimted, there is no need for the Sapphire Reserve unless you use their travel portal for the additional 50% points. I went back to Amex after 2 years with the CSR card. I actually have both the Amex Platinum (for the 5 points for travel and hotels) and the Amex Gold (for the 4 points on Dining and Supermarkets) at a cost of $800 per year. This seems like a lot, but Amex has so many more bonus point opportunities than Chase. And if you use R@kuten, you can link those points to membership rewards. I have accumulated 220K points in a matter of 5 months. A big portion of the points came from bonus categories that Chase doesn't really offer. In full disclosure, I also received 100k in sign up points. So really I have accumulated 120K in points in 5 months which is still pretty good.
I keep thinking the way you're thinking, and every time I'm about to make the switch I come back to the fact that the Chase card is really only $250/yr because the travel credits are practically cash. AMEX Plat forces me to spend on airline incidentals (which I usually avoid like the plague) and Uber, which would be valuable when I travel but is ruined by the fact that it's split up monthly (most months I don't use Ubers). Their dollar amounts for their credits look attractive, but their restrictive use makes them worth less. Chase's $300 is worth $300 to me.

I may still switch eventually if for no other reason than I'd like the expanded lounge access, but apples to apples I still give the nod to the CSR.

If you didn't know you can buy airline gift cards with those airline incidentals credits.

I currently have the regular Sapphire card. It will prevent me from signing up for this card to get the bonus. Do you think I should cancel it (then wait 30 days) or downgrade it to the Freedom Unlimited (then wait 5 days) and apply for this CSP? If I cancel the card, I would have to wait 30 days and by then, this deal might be over? But if I downgrade to Freedom Unlimited, I will loose the $200 bonus for signing up for the Freedom Unlimited. I can get a total of $1000 if I sign up for both, the CSP and the Freedom Unlimited.
