My question has probably already been asked/answered but over 1100 comments will take all day to read. Smilie So here goes...
How can I get instant, or almost instant, approval? I have 2 large transactions coming up almost immediately and they would almost meet the minimum spend. The only Chase card that I have is the regular Freedom, which I have had several years. My credit score is exceptional, close to the max. I appreciate any help/suggestions.

If you're < 5/24, good credit score and income, it's going to be an instant approval. Only issue is if it requires verification, e.g. identity, income, address, wrong phone number used (I screwed up a MDD this way) etc.

It THEN goes on to mention they actually increased the value of points used for on property spend.

In fact- in some cases doing that (which is usually a worse value than rooms BTW)- can get you... 1.5 cents per point.
Sure you may get 1.5X for your spend but what's the use of that if you can find an equivalent property for cash without the 50% markup.

I see you got another reply but just wanted to add. Make sure you call them after approval, if you don't open at a branch, and ask for expedited shipping of the card if your upcoming large payments are that close. If not you'll wait about 7 days for the card.

I mean, if you're the type who thinks paying $60 for a single bed in a flophouse motel that PROBABLY doesn't have bedbugs is "equivalent" to staying in a nice Hyatt, you do you.

Meanwhile the rest of us who know WTF they're talking about will keep getting significantly more than the 1.25c a point you incorrectly claimed was the MAX value of chase points....not just with hotel bookings, but airfares too (and even in coach!)

Hell just transferring directly to Southwest Airlines, even after the recent deval, gets you more than you claimed was the max value and they don't even have a first class!
(It's roughly a low of about 1.36 cents a point, though you can get nearer 1.75 or so on some flights because of the fees you save using points versus dollars)

And that's the simplest of the MANY MANY MANY ways you're 100% wrong about this.

But keep digging, you'll get to China soon enough!

Yeah, once the second AF posts you have 30 days (I think it's technically like 41 or something, but call it 30 to be safe) to do one of the following:

Cancel card (worst option in most cases)

Downgrade card to a $0 AF chase card (if you don't plan to travel and don't mind losing sapphire benefits)

In both of those cases you'll get the AF refunded so no cost to you.

or

Upgrade to CSR- which if you do travel significantly is a much better card and easy enough to get enough value out of to cover the AF (but has a lower signup bonus so isn't as worthwhile to start with if you pick between it and CSP, which you do).

In that case you'd be charged an additional AF above the $95 CSP one (though you get the $300 travel credit, the $100 GE credit, higher point value in the portal or via PYB, free roadside assistance, free priority pass membership including guests, and various other perks)
Thanks for the explanation!

Are there any repercussions that I should consider if I want to cancel within the first year? I mean, if I have no plans to keep the card past year one, why should I wait until the beginning of year two.

If you've already paid for the benefits of the full year, and you get no refund cancelling early, why cancel early?

Having a card that offers free primary rental car insurance is handy (and rare)

You earn 5x on lyft and 2x on dining, etc (which you can leverage with 1.25x for PYB if you don't use points for travel or more value via transfers))- you lose transfer ability entirely if you close the card.

You get a free 1 year dashpass membership with door dash, but it requires using the Chase card to pay for orders so you'd lose that (that alone normally costs more than the $95 annual fee if you're someone who'd otherwise buy it, but even if you only order rarely it's gonna save you 5-10 bucks an order)

It's a no foreign transaction fee card if you care

It has decent purchase and extended warranty protection if you don't have that with other cards.

As to why you don't want to cancel at all (ie why you are better off product changing)-- even if you don't travel (and are thus product changing DOWN instead of up) there's several reasons to wait the year and do that:

1) Simply closing the card reduces your available credit- which can increase your overall credit utilization- which is a significant % of your credit score (how much this matters will vary of course- if you've got $300,000 in available unused credit on other cards, closing this one with a 10k limit or something won't matter much... but that's not super typical)

2) Downgrading is the only way you can do things like get a second Freedom card (which gives you a second $1500 quarterly cap to earn 5x points)

Tried just now, logged in to my chase account, and after I submit the application, it says page could not be loaded / server can't be reached. Tried in Chrome, Firefox, Edge. Anyone else having this issue?

Glad you shared as I am also in same boat since 2 weeks. Called customer service and they were clueless and said maybe its temporary outage and asked to retry later.
Curious to know if anyone else had any luck with this issue?

so ive been telling all my friends to go into the branch to save on the $95 dollars

but it looks like its a better deal to refer them since i get 15k points and i can just pay them the 95 dollars... and looks like i come up with 55 more dollars and in points which i find more valuable

any errors in my train of thought?

FYI, I just tried again, and jt worked fine, and I got approved. For good measure, I tried with a different phone number, no idea if that made a difference.

I see that I can schedule a branch "by phone" meeting to apply for a credit card. I'm curious if anyone has tried that option, and if the annual fee is still waived.
