I got one of the wifi enabled 40,000 grain units last weekend on clearance for $325 and installed it, it's working great. Good deal if you can find one, I got the last one at my store.

You can look at the installation guide on home depot's website. If it costs 2k for labor to install this, I'm in the wrong business.

Depends on how accessible your main incoming water line is. In my case theyd have to tear apart a wall I dont want messed with and the placement for the water softener is pretty inconvenient no matter where in that area its put. But the amount of work involved is what drives up the cost. You could do it yourself Im sure if youre very comfortable with home plumbing.
