TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

Even though the iPhone SE promo still reads 50% off, is that what you would do / have done?
Or for now, since adding a person (seemingly = add a line), are you leaving it as BYOD?
I was told following promos can't be combined with FREE LINE PROMO.
Google Pixel 4a 5g for $175
Half off on iPhone 11
and Free iPhone SE with add a line + port in which I was willing to do but was denied.
For all 3 promos listed above, I was told that I will need to add 2 voice lines, 1 paid and 1 free which I did not want.
I am also using a free line in my iPad but it is quite slow, thinking to add an data line!

I have simple choice plan. Let me know if you or anyone here have 3 free lines on 2 paid lines. Thanks!
I know there will be some who say, I did it with no problems.... not my case.
Now I'm looking into leaving TMO after 15 years, I can't wait. Been eyeing the ATT prepaid.
