If you remove any paid lines within the first year, the free line loses the promo and becomes paid.

TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.

To accomplish it, you would need to:

1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.

This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
My port-in was initiated during T439 promo period and completed today outside of the promo period. Without the port in (with only the added line and traded-in) I was on a bad promo. Once the port-in completed today, the system auto updated to T439 promo in my account --> promotions. Therefore, I don't think it was a requirement the port-ins must be completed by 3/24 EOB, just as long as they are initiated.
YES, you can use this sim in your iPad. I pay for 2 lines and have 3 free lines on promotion (5 lines total)
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

great idea. i'm down to do this. Can you elaborate on this a bit?
  1. so you ported out the number you wanted to keep to GV for like 3-4 months
  2. then you port that GV back into your plan
  3. finally you cancel the "free/unwanted" lines?
  4. how do you know that your ported GV number becomes the free line?
That's not how porting works. Let's use an example. You start 5 lines, 3 paid, 2 free. Let's assume 1 year has passed since you obtained the final free line, so you are able to cancel lines without affecting the free lines.

1) You port out 123-1234 paid line to Google Voice. 123-1234 is automatically cancelled by T-mobile.You now have 2 paid lines, 2 free lines on T-Mobile, and 123-1234 on Google Voice.
2) After a couple months on Google Voice, you port out from Google Voice into T-mobile. You tell the rep which line you want to port in to. That line is one of the free lines. Google automatically cancels 123-1234 once port out is complete. Now you have 2 paid lines, 2 free lines on T-mobile. 123-1234 is a free line.

Here is my current scenario:
Line 1 & 2: Paid
Line 3: Free (3rd line free promo from before)
Line 4 to 6: Free (free line promos in 2020)
Line 7: Paid (recent costco $300 deal for byod)
Line 8: Free (buy one get one with the costco deal)

I do plan to cancel lines 7 and 8 once I receive the costco shop card. Is it worth adding this new free line? Will it affect my ability to cancel line 7 and 8? I am hoping none of these affect my discounts on lines 1 to 6.

Oh that makes sense. So the port back would replace one of the free lines. Thanks!

asking for someone who has Select Choice plan:
how much of a difference if changing select choice plan to simple choice? i think those 2 are the closest to each other in terms of pricing.

For those with SOC code MGNTA2, how much are you paying with 20% insider discount?
For 5 lines ( 4 paid and 1 free ) , I pay $160 - $32 (20% insider discount) = $128.
I added 3 more free lines last year. So total 8 lines for $128.

I will add the 9th line tomorrow and hope/pray I don't go through the same things like you did.

Does the Google voice line needs to be a paid Google service? I'm trying to port Google voice, but the T-Mobile rep is asking if the Google voice is a free service.

Wanted to get the A71 5G for $100, but they're out of stock. Ended up getting the Moto G Play for free, along with the free line. Will probably flip the phone for $50 and keep the free line indefinitely. Thanks!

Mine is Magenta 1.0. When I had less than 8 lines, MAGENTA2, after upgrading to 9+ lines, MANGENTA9.
