TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)

If considering porting anyways, try getting a used iPhone 8 for cheap (under $200) and you can get an iPhone 12 instead. It will have better trade in value in two years than the SE.
If switching to Magenta Max, do all promos transfer l, for those with personal experience? Also if 9-12 lines, what is the credit per line for free lines?

Thanks to shockx, ported a Visible number eligible for the iPhone promo and completed that yesterday. Phone was out of stock and was told to come back today to purchase along with trade-in. Phone CS was surprised that corporate store did it out of sequence by porting first before selling the phone, but assured that everything looks good on the account.
After $110 instant credit, remaining $720 applied at $30/month over 24-months and already showing up in the account under the correct promotion "2021 Apple Switch Trade P1".
Paid $30 SIM + CS fee as it was in-store, and contemplating if I should call in for a refund. But, the trade-in was smooth and all credits showing up within an hour after store visit.
To summarize:
I have a Simple Choice Family Unlimited Talk & Text with 6 Voice Line and 2 Data Lines
Both Data lines are part of Friends & Fam 2 Lines On Us promotion
One Voice Line is part of 2020 Line On Us

i think there is some confusion between is my number able to port (any non TMO # ). . .and will this port # satisfy the port in phone promo requirements (i.e. only ATT or VZW or mvno exclusively on their networks for your particular mvno sim card or #)
The link above answers the former but doesn't address eligibility for port promo.

if it says its VZW or ATT then you are set.
but if it says landline, TMO or Sprint or Bandwidth (GV) then no guarantees your PROMO WILL STICK PAST 2ND MONTH EVEN IF APPROVED AND SHOWS ON YOUR ACCOUNT NOW.
most of those number barn #'s trace back to Bandwidth
why risk losing the $830 or$800 in credits? just get an att or vzw mvno prepaid # to be safe
