TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)

This deal is a single free line. After 12 months, you can move any paid line out as long as you maintain at least two paid lines in your account.
I read on another website some people switching to a different simple choice website.
I have USCFM4. Sometimes it qualifies sometimes it doesn't. I don't trust any tmo employees as some will say I qualify and others say I won't. Fyi, I did get one of the 2020 to stick but others didn't even one that I signed up for online.
I also stacked the T439 promo for a new iPhone 12 on 24-month EIP. I really dislike EIP deals, especially those involving a trade, but I was lured in by the "free" ($830) iPhone upgrade.
The entire process only took about 20 minutes. All assist fees were waived, and free device shipping was included.
Now to sit back and see what my account looks like once the new changes take effect. I should end up with 4 paid and 5 free lines with all of my old discounts applied. Hopefully I see a price drop on my monthly bill like most of the others have seen who have joined the grandfathered 9-line club.

I added the free line on 3/17 (10th line) and it showed up on the account immediately. I added Iphone 12 promo with trade-in and port-in and that applied the same day also. So looks like the system is generating the promos automatically without glitches.
