Not necessary.
I opened the free line in Costco and then came home and chatted with T-Force (FB Messenger) to put all promos in place including the porting-in.
They said if I order iPhone-12 (i.e. "upgrade" the device on the new free line) then they will have to charge $20 upgrade fees which I can avoid by upgrading it online, so I did the upgrade online and confirmed with them if everything looks good (e.g. free line, port-in and trade-in promo applied).
The only minor issue is, the Visible # which is bought from here on SD and ported-in for that iPhone-12 promo is from CA and I am in TX...lol
I hope my daughter won't mind the CA number once she starts going to middle school from Aug...;-)
BTW, does it matter if the # is from CA and we are using in TX? Any cons?
nope, it doesnt! ive been using Chicago # in CA past 20yrs. never bothered to change it .ya, some area code experts does stare or aquaint when sharing #s for whatever reasons, but rare lately!

i didnt know you can open line in costco and still call-in and get all offers from tmobile - free line, port-in and trade-in promo ? isnt the costco number you got when opening line, tied to promos?

I'm currently have 6 lines (4 paid & 2 free) on FRLTULF2, should I request to change to TIULFM9 even though I'm still 2 lines away from the max? 2 lines are One plus promo & 2 are 50% off add a line, also have hookup & kickbacks. The 2 free lines are currently not having one promo plus which I'm working to get.
TIULFM9 is for 9-12 lines. Once you exceed 8 lines on your current soc, then upgrade.

We have T-Mobile ONE Promo plan with 9 lines. And our SOC qualifies.

What's the catch with getting a free line?

Why do you need a number to do this?

I thought for eSIM you need to call them and get device EID added on their end. Once they added i was able to scan the QR code and activate eSIM on my Pixel 4a 5g.
It used to be that way but it can now be done easily on your tmobile account.

CA is different. People have been moving here from all over the USA, and we have maybe 36 different area codes. So people don't even pay attention.
In TX, they will blame you for all their problems.
(take their jobs, traffic, housing prices, overcrowded schools, turning the state purple...)

Costco rebates tie the # you input when you submit your rebate, not the one on the form. So do all your steps first, then submit rebate at the end.

No, I went to Costco simply because I wanted to the Free SIM and on the same day (plus, as a long shot, try BYOD $150 GC ;-))
Before going there I confirmed with T-Force that they can apply everything (including Line on Us) even if the line is opened in Costco.

Potentially but I read in prior threads that some folks did that themselves in the web portal.

You get a free line. The catch is you can't make any changes to any voice line on your account for 12 months, e.g. cancel a paid line. Giving you a free line essentially is churn prevention, and stable/reduced churn sounds great on the earnings call. And as they don't know yet how this will all work out with the print folks, it's likely a good idea to give folks a promo they have to stick with for a while.

Not really as two systems. For the (free) line you open at Costco you get a free SIM, no activation fee and then submit a BYOD rebate for a Costco Shop card with WirelessAssociates, a.k.a. the Kiosk. It goes in a different system. Then, essentially same day or within 1-2 days you can do a TMO store or chat or self-order online deal, depending on the deal terms (port-in, trade-in etc). This will activate the promo in the TMO system.

The key is these two events (activation of the line and phone order) need to happen within the same promo period, even though you do them with 2 different partners. If you wait too long, you could get screwed. E.g one time TMO did a stop/restart with the phone promo, say promo stops today and restarts tomorrow with a different code. If you then activated the line in the old promo period you cold not order the phone in the new as the line activation event was not in the same. Happened to me in December. But otherwise, works just fine.

So we can take double/triple dip (Costco byod rebate, free line, iPhone promo, etc)?
