I fish, but I'm not a serious fisherman. I hike but I'm not a serious backpacker. And I tinker around the house but I'm not a serious woodworker or mechanic.

So when I see deals for products for them I don't fully understand, I keep my mouth shut.

If you do long rides, your phone isn't going to last, simple as that.

Hey, Great post! The only thing I can see that you're missing here is does the Garmin play music. I always enjoy my favorite music app playing in the background when I'm riding. That being said, I have experienced blackouts from heat, on my old phone, I just got a new galaxy s21 5g phone and I don't know how it will perform (probably same), and I would hate to see it get broken....I think I like your supplement idea!
Even with the Garmin computer, it's still normal to carry your phone in your back pocket(all cyclists I know still carry their phones). I treat my phone as a separate communication and media device, and my bike computer(or running watch when I'm running) is purely an activity tracking device to collect and read out all of my data for me.

Garmin makes watches that connect via bluetooth to play music, but since it's normal to carry your phone as a cyclist, there isn't really a need for that. I still use my phone to play podcasts & music, take the occasional pictures, and connect to my bike computer to have texts or other notifications show up onto my bike computer screen.

I use a Garmin forerunner 645 watch to run, and Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM to bike.

I own the Garmin Edge 130 and it's perfect for me. The battery life is listed at 10 hours, but I think you'd be lucky to get there. I usually plug in around 8-9.

I bike commute about 25 miles round trip to work on days that aren't bad weather or ridiculously cold, along with other various rides of various lengths. I'm able to track just about any stat that I personally need. I have current time, elapsed time, elevation gain, speed, avg speed, heart rate, calories burned, and distance all on the screen at once. It's easy to read.

I have a Wahoo Tickr Fit HR monitor paired with it and it works great.

Overall, no complaints after about 2,000 miles ridden with it so far. I haven't really needed to use some of the other features like mapping yet, so I can't speak to those.

Lastly, I'd highly recommend using the out front mount. I bought a 3rd party under handlebar one that mounts to the bottom of my hoverbar on my Canyon Grail and it's in perfect view for just about any riding position.

Plus when your phone is connected to garmin Edge there is crash detection, I crashed really hard (25mph) on a fast downhill sweeper turn that had debris. It took me minutes to get up but it texted my emergency contact (mom lol) that I had crashed with exact gps pindrop, if unconscious that could be pretty useful and only works when phone connected.

May I ask, without being attacked, what this does that my smartphone + smart watch can't besides the radar feature? I heard battery life, which has never been even close to an issue for me on any of my 30+ mile rides (I know that's not much compared to serious riders but I really feel I could safely triple that distance if I ever felt like it ((I won't)) and still have battery left).
I, for one, carry my phone in a back jersey pocket. I absolutely would hate having that bulk sitting on my handlebars. Also if I crash, I'd much rather ruin my sub $200 bike computer than my $700 phone. So form factor for one. Also, since I commute, I'd much rather use the bike computer battery than burn through my phone battery using GPS. Third, I can integrate my HR monitor directly to it, which I can't with my phone. Many people integrate other equipment as well like power or cadence meters.

For a purely casual rider, sure, get a phone mount and use that. But for anyone who enjoys a more streamlined experience, a bike computer is a must.

I usually carry a small power bank when using my phone for longer (>20m) rides, and a vivoactive 3 for tracking. the phone generally lasts with the power bank, if I need it. How is this if you don't need a gps (used to the route)? The V3 is good but runs lower on battery after a few hours of active tracking.
Eesh! No thanks for the extra weight and bulk of even a small power bank, plus phone. I mountain bike and a cell phone plus battery pack is just extra shit I have to lug around when a cycling computer (I use Lezyne) does everything I need in a tiny, durable, and way-less-expensive-than-a-phone-if-I-crash package.

Not worth it. Get a Garmin 745, where you can use for bike, run, walk, swim, etc

The Varia radar is a gamechanger for road safety and really not that expensive when you figure the premium over a higher end rear light alone. I love the variable flash pattern that increases in frequency as cars get closer. The radar data display on the Garmin is useful for less used roads but not so much in urban traffic as then it's going off constantly.

Is the Varia actually worth it? I ride enough as a triathlete, but I can't help wonder if it's another gimmick that wouldn't really help from being hit as you'd just tune the warnings out after time.
Had the same question every time I see the Varia come up here and finally broke down and bought this morning. Did some research on bike forums and viewed youtube vids beforehand, and didn't find a single owner who regretted their purchase.

For the 130+? I've been looking at it from REI with the $20 off coupon + google pay 20% off, but curious how you got it for 70...

Bought a RVR315! The 515/510 with light is only 65lumen max (I'm sure the adaptive helps tho) and I already have a cyglolight hotshot 200lm that is very bright and gets lots of compliments.

πŸ’°πŸ’° **FYI** with the "GPAY" app you can activate 20% cashback for 1 purchase through REI when paying with activated card, I guess I'll get a GPay credit for the CB.. $127 w 6%tax ->$25CB = ~$101 shipped for me. πŸ‘πŸ‘

How did you get the RVR315 for $70? It was 119 w 20%CB which is $24-25 depending on state tax..
