I found The newest ARRIS SURFboard DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem on sale at there online store for $169 before tax. This is cheaper than i found it anywhere else at $199.99.

This is a savings of $30.99 or 15.5% off the original price.

For the record if you have cable you need a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. I know there are some high end DOCSIS 3.0 modems but the cable companies will never push them past 400-600mbps because of the overhead (lack of compression) for their networks. You only need this if you are going beyond 1GB internet. Then you have to have 2.5gb ports on your computer. If you have wifi only this will not benefit you.

It's future proof and the price is right but only if you run ethernet to your computer.

If you already have a decently fast modem, there's no need to upgrade. In general, it's pretty difficult to saturate your pipe. For those of us with data caps, there's also no point. Actually downloading at max speed will put you over your cap in a few hours.

i dont know what your talking about. all i know is. if i want unlimited data. i pay $30 more, on top of my internet package, even if i own my own modem. if i sign up with their "xfi complete" package, they will send me the xfi modem and i get unlimited data included. all for only $25 more, on top of my internet package.

why? i cant come up with any reason. i dont think they rent you the xfi modem for free (and pay $5 less) so that they can only slow down your download speed

Wait. Why? I just replaced my parents' XFI with a CM1100 (and a wifi router) so they could stop paying the monthly rental fee.

Why was that a bad move exactly?

(If it matters they're fine with their 200Mbps plan.)
if they live by themselves. noone else. both watching 1 tv all day long, you will be safe at below 600gb watching yourtube/netflix. no need to sign up for unlimited. expect to go beyond 1tb if you are watching 2 or more tvs, especially using xfinity stream app.

according to xfinity data usage [xfinity.com]
Quote :
All Internet-based video streaming and download services, including Internet-delivered programming available through www.xfinity.com/stream and Xfinity apps, is included in the calculation of monthly usage.
its not how fast your internet (200mbps) is, its how much internet your parents are using every month. if you go beyond 1.2 tb, they will charge you, up to $50 more.

How is the Arris S33 compared to the Motorola MB8611 or even the MB8600

same company/owner doesnt mean its the same quality. everyone knows a Kia is worse than a Huyndai.

Exactly my point. It's an extra 30 in my area from them and that's monthly..i don't go over my cap at all, so i don't need to be paying them an extra 30 for at least 12 months. Do the math there. if you don't understand that then there's no point in continuing this discussion. they charge $10 extra for every 50gb of data used, so even if i were to go over the cap it still beats an extra $30 a month for no reason. i almost forgot... to use their unlimited "free".. you need to use their modem...nah i like having my own things.

mb8611 is exacty the same with mb8600, except the 2.5 gig port. arris s33 has the same specs like mb8611.

from reddit:

Quote :
I have had two of the MB8600s, they work fine as long as you don't use LACP to try to take advantage of the multiple ports. This limits you to the ~940 Mb/s max of a single gigabit ethernet link. If you have a router that supports LACP though, you can aggregate multiple ports together, and I was able to see combined transfer rates of just over 1100 Mb/s when doing so from my Comcast Gigabit plan. Unfortunately, though, it seems there is some bug in the hardware or firmware, such that about every 30 hours or so, the modem will drop the link and stop responding. When this happens, the modem interface becomes unreachable, and it requires a power cycle to restore. It seems like the similar Arris SB8200 has a very similar issue when using LACP. I sent the first modem back to Motorola and got a replacement, which has the exact same issue. It works fine if I go back to just a single link.

If you have a router with a 2.5GBe port or an SFP+ 10GB port, I would spring for the 8611. That way if your provider offers a 2GB service or will in the future you are ready for it.

extra $30 in your area for modem rental or for unlimited data?

so you dont go over your cap or your parents?

usually, once you go over 1.2tb, its not a simple 50gb anymore, usually its more than a couple hundred gigs.

i just want to tell everyone that there is no need to buy a modem (and a router) if they are going for unlimited data. sign up with xfi complete, get everything included for $5 less than you buy your own modem (and a router) and sign up with their seperate unlimited data plan, which is $30.

Im an adult, a mature one(i'd like to think lol) i don't live with my parents. I have gone over b4 and it's only that extra $10 charge so in my case it's not worth it. And that they charge $10-15 modem rental fee. Comcast/xfinity are crooks. I only need internet, i don't use nothing else.

that question was meant for the other user. i thought i quoted him. LMAO

you dont have to stay with them unless you have no choice. in that case, i wouldnt blame on them.

i just switched to tmobile 5g home internet (for unlimited data) but the speed is really not consitent. so will have to switch back to xfinity soon. they are still the cheapest in our area, even after the promo is over. they know their market. i already called in a hundred times to ask for a better rate after 1 year promo was over. they wouldnt budge. other competitors in my area require 2 year agreement and at least $20 more for the same speed.

You'd be surprised how much control ISP's have built in to the equipment they supply. Raises many privacy and security issues.

FYI Starlink isn't going to (or meant to) match cable or fiber performance in urban areas. Too many users in close proximity.

Ah. Got it. Thanks. (I'd honestly forgotten that data caps are a thing for some ISPs - not even trying to humblebrag but there we are...) You are correct though: I just checked their account and they have a 1.2TB cap. But on the 18th of the month they're at 140GB so I'm not TOO worried about it for them.
